Also from a big family and the key is that none of us had more than 2 … none of us wanted to repeat the chaos and borderline negligence.

Why not? When I was 16 I took care of my 18 month old niece while my sister and BIL spent a weekend in NY city. Of course, that was 40 years ago and I was a very responsible 16 yr. old.


You had one toddler to care for not 6 kids. Her parents were in NY not 2-days travel away. And presumably your parents were close by to help if needed.

Ok this is definitely a troll. You said you’d be away for 5 days. I’ve been to the Maldives and I know it can take more than a day just to get to your resort (not counting the return trip).

I grew up in a large family as the eldest of 7 and babysit for weeks at a time, at 15-17. This was in the 80s, so a different time but If OP knows her daughter is capable then I wouldn’t say it’s that horrible.


“Weeks at a time” isn’t babysitting, it’s parenting. And if you were parenting 6 kids on your own, for weeks at a time, as a 15 year old, then many — including CPS — would view it as horrible. I hope you had some serious backups planned.

Because there’s a difference between taking care of one toddler for a weekend and taking care of 6 siblings for over a week. That’s why.

Even licensed day cares can’t have one person supervise more than three under age 12 and you have four. Are you not aware of the local family of 12 kids whose infant died because the father thought the eldest daughter was taking care of it and vice versa? It was left in the car after church and died. Father went to
