It’s sad and the districts are truly stupid but Trump and obedient republicans forced us into this madness. We cannot be principled while they thrash democracy. I applaud the temporary nature of this and hope that we can return to democratic norms when the trump era is over.

In response to Ted Cruz's objection to Virginia gerrymandering, I might submit this:

“Partisanship is inherent and permissible in the legislative districting process” — Ted Cruz in September, in an amicus brief supporting the Texas gerrymander.

"Section 6. Application and duration of certain redistricting amendments.

The authorization in Article II, Section 6 authorizing the General Assembly to modify one or more congressional districts at any point following adoption of a decennial reapportionment law in the event that any State of the United States of America conducts a redistricting of such state's congressional districts at any point following that state's adoption of a decennial reapportionment law shall be limited to making such modifications between January 1, 2025, and October 31, 2030, in response to actions taken by another state between January 1, 2025, and October 31, 2030."

I'm not questioning why Democrats want it to be temporary but wondering if there's a precedent for time-limited provisions in a State Constitution. It strikes me as strange.

California did the same thing. It’s strange because it’s a response to the President ordering Texas to redistrict mid-decade, which is also strange.

Democrats doing the "right" thing when Republicans don't care is what got us into this mess in the first place. It wasn't that long ago when both sides actually tried to work together.

This 👆 is exactly right. Until Democrats start fighting dirty like the Republicans have for years, our society, education, culture, international relations, environment and everything else in this country is going to continue to be damaged and eventually destroyed. Dems have to get in the mud with the pigs.

AI? Please god no. But there are algorithms that have already been created to do just that. Heck, those same algorithms are being used in TX and CA to gerrymander. The underlying problem is that partisan and incumbent protection gerrymandering is legal.

+1 Republicans started this by insisting they needed to gerrymander Texas in ways that were clearly denying representation to certain groups. California at least asked its voters to approve the new voter maps. Texas just steamrolled everyone/

+1

Fvk them.
