We have military insurance as retirees and we will look at the cost/benefit and if its a better plan/more cost effective we will keep our child on as long as we can. We have to pay for it after 22, but for us, it doesn't matter if we have a family of 3/4 or 20, its the same price so you keep the kids on as long as possible.

I'm 53 and my kids are 28 and 24. I was never going to retire before the younger one turns 26, although that sounds delightful. I'll probably retire when my older kid is 39 or 40, yikes.
