I am in a blacker part of DC. I haven't seen a checkpoint yet and I drive every day but just within DC. I rarely leave DC proper. Sounds like many of the checkpoints are near/on the highways crossing into DC from MD and VA.

I was on South Dakota Ave NE earlier today, and 3 vehicles with interior lights and sirens whizzed by, with Minnesota plates. I took note as the leading vehicle was a tan SUV, but the center one looked like a white landscaping truck, you know the ones that they l Ioad lawnmowers on. Open back? Third was a white SUV. I suspect that those were ICE vehicles, why else would Minnesotans be driving with lights and sirens on?

Yes everyone(not just the driver) has to show ID and proof of citizenship. A real ID is not proof of citizenship. You also have to give a reason why you are traveling- where you are going, who you are meeting, where you are coming from, address of employer, etc. They can impounded your car and take your phone if ICE or Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

So in DC now we have to travel with papers. We are truly in a Gestapo state.

If you’re driving a car, it’s not unreasonable to assume you’d have your drivers license, registration, and proof of insurance with you.

What is unreasonable about that?

Have you heard of the 4th Amendment?

The PP said "if you are driving a car" and he/she is correct. You do have to provide DL, Registration and proof of insurance during a traffic stop. That has been long established and isn't subject to 4th amendment.

Oh yes it is. The 4th Amendment has not been stuck down yet.

Didn't say it was, but by law have to present a valid driver's license during a trafic stop if you are the one operating the vehicle. I'm shocked that anyone would think otherwise.

They are not asking for ID but proof of citizenship. They are also asking where are you coming from, where are you going, why are you going there, party registration, etc. They will take any firearms in the vehicle and arrest the driver. Oh and they are stopping all drives with no probable cause.

While I, as am an immigrant and pp you're responding to, absolutely hate this, of course. It's important to distinguish what is legal and what is not. If DC MPD stops you during those check points it is absolutely legal for them to ask for your ID, registration and proof of insurance. You could be and probably will be arrested if you do not provide that regardless of your immigration status. I'm not sure what authority ICE has for establishing those check points or asking for information, but I would love if a lawyer who actually knows what jurisdicion they have would chime in and let us know.

But we aren't talking about traffic stops. We are talking about illegal ICE checkpoints.

They are stopping people in their cars, correct?

Are you new here? If you are driving a car, it is illegal to drive in DC without a valid driver's license or learner's permit in your possession, and the DC Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) states that you are required to obtain a DC driver's license if you become a resident for 60 days or more and operate a motor vehicle. Driving without one is a misdemeanor offense, with penalties including potential jail time, fines, and vehicle impoundment.
