Bad art leaves zero impact. If you know it well enough to hate it, well, you know it. The actual "worst" song would be both awful and utterly forgettable. Too many earworms, overplayed tracks, and era staples here.
No, it just means they were overplayed enough to enforce the memory of how bad they were along with an awareness that a lot of people must like them because they were being overplayed.

"We Built This City on Rock and Roll" is the worst song that has ever existed, with "Afternoon Delight" a close second, and "I Just Called to Say I Love You" a distant third. That the last one was perpetrated by Stevie Wonder, who is responsible for some of the best popular music of the 20th century, makes it particularly painful, though.
As for Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes, the female singer had pretty serious addiction issues, which may explain this weird performance (if not the stupid song).
YES! I have a visceral hatred for "We Built this City" and agree with your other assessments.
ANOTHER FOR WE BUILT THIS CITY. I HATE IT SO MUCH I HAVE TO YELL
AND I YELL BACK. THE WORLD HASN'T ENDED YET, MICHAEL STIPE! THE REASON YOU FELT FINE WAS BECAUSE YOU MADE MONEY HAND OVER FIST OFF R.E.M.'S WORST SONG EVER!!
Honorable mention to "End of the World's" evil twin: "We Didn't Start The Fire" by Billy Joel.
Nope. “We Didn’t Start The Fire” (the updated version) by Fallout Boy. OMG.

I Shot the Sheriff - Bob Marley
They were both on the radio constantly and just drone on and on. I guess you can add Edmund Fitzgerald to the list.
This one has nothing going for it. No story, no tune, no depressing history lesson, no adequate singing
