A lot of people were suggesting she go by her middle name. I suggested this to her as well, but she said that her middle name (Eleanor) is also an old lady name. I think that's just unreasonable. I knew plenty of young Eleanors, and besides, she could just go by Ellie! I also talked to her about the sexual connotations of "Cherry", but she said I was being "gross" and just walked out the door![]()
Honestly, I think she just wants to pick and choose her name and that's not how names work!
Anonymous wrote:She doesn't want to be embarrassed about her name but given her age and innocence, she probably has no idea Cherry is even more embarrassing because of the connotations. Especially for a teen. Maybe explain all that too her? If her mind is made up, she probably won't care. Tell her it's a bad idea, it's a stripper name, and doesn't fit her, and you don't like it.
Suggest Shari (kind of cool, but still leads back to Sharon, which she hates.)

Actually, that is how names work as a adult.
And, you named this poor girl Sharon Eleanor! Are you sure you aren't making this up?
I think that's very mean and OP has beautiful taste in names. You're not being very nice

However, she's now saying that it's a "middle-aged white woman name" (keep in mind that she is white) and demanding that we call her "Cherry". She's already got her friends to call her Cherry and plans to start high school introducing herself to classmates and teachers as Cherry. I'm not a fan. In addition to the inappropriate associations that cherries can have, Sharon is her name. It's a wonderful, lovely name, and now she's saying that she wants to be called a piece of fruit? I don't get it. WWYD?
Some young teens say they are gay. Some say they are trans. Some say they are pan. Some say they are really cats and want to use a litter box at school (ok, that isn’t a real thing, but you get the idea. Some ask to be called by a different name and deliberately choose one they suspect will irk you.
You can overreact or you can not die on these hills. Choose wisely.

Tell her that nicknames have to be bestowed by others and EARNED, they CANNOT be made up by the person themselves. People make fun of people who do that.
