Thank you for contacting the School Board regarding the proposed calendar change for Friday, June 6, 2025. We have received your message and will share it with the appropriate staff members.

We understand that changes to the school calendar can significantly impact our community, and we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

This proposed change is based on our calendar policy, which requires us to recognize certain holidays that fall during the school week—including Eid al Adha. The need for this revision arose due to a recent update in the timing of Eid al Adha, which is now expected to begin after sunset on Thursday, June 5. Because this updated timing was confirmed only earlier this week (on Monday), the proposal is being brought forward on short notice.

The School Board will review and vote on this proposed change at its meeting this evening, May 15, 2025. We will communicate the outcome once a decision has been made. If the Board approves making June 6 a holiday, the Superintendent’s Office will work closely with schools that have events scheduled on that date to ensure appropriate back-up plans are in place.

I feel so bad for all the kids who are having their activities cancelled. Eid begins at sundown. There is no reason to make this change. Other districts aren’t.

Eid actually now begins at sundown on the 5th.

Even though the decision is likely already made for 6/6, having the school board members hear from a lot of parents will hopefully help soften the ground for getting these holidays off the calendar in future years. So keep emailing!!!

Has the decision been made yet? Agree it’s absurd.

It's on the consent agenda for tonight's meeting, so still time to email.

It’s Arlington. People are afraid to be called racist

Yes, I imagine any discussion there would consist of “isn’t it great that we’re closing on June 6 because we’re so equitable & inclusive?! Yay!” The end.

Why TF don’t you read the whole thread to find out?

My bad for missing that one post on page 3 of an eight page thread.

Do people who celebrate this holiday even want APS to close last minute? I would assume there are parents who will still go to work on those days even if the kids have off.

The policy also states that calendars will be developed 2 years prior to the school year. It makes no mention of the procedure for changing the calendar based on whether or not someone saw the moon.

This is a key point. Changing the schedule 3 weeks before is not acceptable.

Exactly.

Closing school for every GD holiday is one thing. But closing school with less than a month’s notice is not acceptable.
