It wasn’t Pyle, it was Walt Whitman High School.

Just wanted to say I'm so, so sorry for your loss and for the words of others posted here. I wouldn't necessarily continue to read this thread, there will still probably be more thoughtless posts made here by other parents. I hope you can remember the good times you had with your friends. NP. I'm so deeply sorry to have learned of the deaths of these young people. I'm sorry, too, that there are others on this thread being needlessly and casually cruel about these deaths. I experienced the death of peers far too young, and my own teens have, as well.
I can imagine what you are dealing with because I still remember how traumatic it was to be in high school and lose a friend unexpectedly.

I agree. But it’s a preventable tragedy. Better choices on the part of all the parents and all the kids could easily have prevented it. 16/17 year olds are not mini adults. They still need limits and scaffolding. I know lots of parents that basically stopped parenting in about 6th grade. And these are affluent UMC people. They just checked out.

It is tragic.
As a parent of preteens who knew kids who died in car crashes in high school including my best friend's bf, I am very sad for these kids and their families and friends.
No, it's not a tragedy. By definition. There's no one who's noble falling from grace, here. This is not profound human suffering. This is just some idiot teens who thought they were immortal doing stupid stuff. It's commonplace.
It's infuriating. It's sad. It's a royal bummer. It's cliched. It's criminal. It sucks for the affected families. But it is not, by any actual definition, a "tragedy."

To give your teen a high performance car? High performance compared to a 2006 Honda wouldn’t have been any different.. Older cars would put teens at higher risk if accidents occurred like this. You all are the idiots, for even making a forum to bash out teens and for saying the parents are idiots. Nobody deserves to die but also don’t belittle what you simple can’t give your child.
All three teens are well highly educated with ap scholars and many full scholarship offerings. Full ride. No drugs, no entitlement. Pure bliss, and honorable teens who have and give so much respect to everyone around them. Simply good teens enjoying their favorite place to eat and shop.

Nice try on the jealousy thing but no. We can afford to give our kids high performance cars to drive but we wouldn’t do that because we are good parents. My kids can drive a high performance car when they have the brain development to earn and buy it themselves.
It has nothing to do with being good parents. I posted the most feathers in cars. It did not list them as they usually have more safety features. You need to monitor them.

Correct. This is NOT a tragedy. This is an entirely expected and predictable outcome.
A tragedy would’ve involved them hurting or killing innocent people in the other vehicle. Fortunately it sounds like tragedy was narrowly avoided, and only the negligent participants suffered the consequences.
This wasn’t tragic - this was lucky.

I absolutely agree if the parents were negligent they should be sued but it makes no sense to blame it on “a bmw.” Kids drive way too fast and kill themselves and others in all types of cars. (-a mom who drives an old Camry)
Have you really not noticed that 95% of these accidents involve a BMW?
Perhaps BMWs don't fare well in crashes.
The problem is that BMWs drive too fast too easily and drivers do not realize that they are out of control.

Because otherwise, they are driven too fast by a driver. In this case a teen driver, in a car they had no business being in.
My teen drives my BMW SUV. But he’s not an idiot and and drive carefully. It’s the driver not the car to blame.
The SUV is a tank and not a race car.

Look, I think it’s stupid to give teenagers a BMW and I see the pattern of these spoiled rich boys and fatal accidents, but if you’ve ever driven a BMW SUV, you will understand it actually handles like crap. It’s miserable to drive and is a deterrent. I really don’t like ours at all. My teenagers would never drive it simply because it’s SO difficult to maneuver and stopping it at even 40 mph is like stopping a truck.
Ever consider that those are the cars the parents own and they are not buying them for the kids but borrowing the parents. You sound horrible. I prefer an SUV as it handles much better than a car and better in rain and snow.

Exactly, stop acting like this was the parents being unresponsible for giving their kid a BMW. We have 2 cars for our family and 3 teen drivers. They borrow our cars, and do not have a car of their own. Granted, ours are Honda SUV and Minivan, but we have not bought them their own car. But if my kid had proven to drink and drive or drive irresponsibly, they would absolutely lose car privileges. And they know they can always Uber home, no questions asked.

Teens from South County driving through near the Pentagon were on their way to DC to drink. Doesn’t take a genius to know what they were doing.
The car was southbound. Looks like they were headed home.

We bought a new car for our DD when she was in college and needed a car. It was a boring, very reliable sedan with all the new idiot-proof safety features that you could imagine. She has been out of college for 8 years now. Still driving her car.
My DS is also due for a car. He wants his dad's sports car. Generously suggested to us that we wont have to buy a new car for him. No way. He will also get a boring very reliable sedan with all the idiot-proof safety features that he drives for next 10 years.
We need to decrease the age to get a learner's permit and increase the age by which kids get their driver's license. In fact, they must learn to drive for a number of years before they get their adult driver's license.
