Even ignoring the merits of this argument, it's unfair. It shouldn't matter to them if D.C. wants to waste its money, though -- it's local dollars, not federal dollars. The principle involved is local control, not fiscal responsibility; if we were wasting federal money, that'd be different.
Well, when congresswomen are assaulted in their DC apartments. And, Congressmen are brazenly carjacked. And when senior Congressional staff suffer life changing wounds. Then the merits sorta go out the window.
Therefore, cut the budget??? Make it make sense.

Bike lanes cost nothing. They are much cheaper to maintain than roads for cars, and have huge environmental and health benefits.

How does randomly cutting the budget make anyone safer?
Same idea as the federal government, cut the current government workers then hire a J6er as chief of MPD and MAGA officers. DC is an easy punching bag for Trump and I expect him to put the worst of his base in DC positions just to mock the council.
This Council does enough to mock itself everyday of the week. I mean Biden through under the bus with that horrific DC crime “reform” bill. Even the California senators voted against it. This takes talent.

Fix what? As long as they are going to convince themselves of that kind of stupidity there’s no point. And of course we could rip out every bike lane and they’d still come after us.

That's right, because the only place in the budget that isn't essential in DC is law enforcement.
The operating budget is almost entirely made up of essential personnel. Teachers, cops, firemen, trash collectors etc. There is no way to cut half a billion dollars halfway through the fiscal year without cutting them. DC's budget shouldn't be subsidizing the federal government.
