Good question. My wasian kids aren’t in college yet, but they do seem to gravitate towards other wasian, asian, and other -sian kids, of which there are many in our area. My daughter has only a few white friends, but then again, there aren’t that many white kids in her school anyway.

It comes from Asian Americans who acknowledge the differences between white and black Asians compared to them. Parents would be horrified if they saw the racial categorizations of college kids today

Hapa means "half". In Hawaii (and perhaps on the West Coast now, its commonly used to refer to someone who is half White and half Asian. "Hapa haole" (half white) is the longer term used. "Haole" is the word locals in Hawaii use for White people. FWIW, I grew up in Hawaii and am part Native Hawaiian.
