I am an alum of VU. Graduated 2001. We did wear cocktail attire to football games as part of Greek life. Looking at the stats now as my own kid researches colleges (rising junior), Vandy has changed a lot. More students and Greek life has decreased in number of students and houses. I think this tracks with how selective it’s become. It’s no longer just a wealthy southern school, it’s extremely competitive and the kids who attend are more serious and less interested in what Greek life represents. So while I’m sure there are still those wearing suits and dresses to the games, it’s definitely not as many as it once was.

Do you actually know anything about the school, firsthand? My son attended (we lived in Atlanta at the time). Not 50 years ago, he is in his mid 20s. Not every single game, but this is indeed a thing.

You and others are getting WAY too riled up about this. I think many of us recognize that it's a fabulous university and very difficult admit but have simply been surprised at how the our coworkers, family and friends aren't aware of this. I recently took my kid to tour. I came back and told friends and family and made the comment: "my kid really liked it but it's super hard to get into." And 5/5 people replied "wow, I had no idea it was that difficult."

I'm not a rankings obsessed person at all. But I certainly noticed that the general perception (among my educated friend set) was that Vanderbilt is not that difficult of an admission. That's all many of us are saying. If you're not in academia or don't have a college senior you may not recognize that it's the level school it is. That's all.

Does anyone ever question whether Harvard or Yale are prestigious? My point is that if prestige is a priority, there are even more widely recognized options. I would absolutely consider sending my child to Vanderbilt if it were the right fit, but it’s a school where I’d need to do some research to understand how competitive admissions are. It’s somewhat like a top small liberal arts college: highly impressive to those who are familiar with it, but the recognition might not be as widespread.

no, they are. The are law partners, physicians, etc.
