“Under the current National Voter Registration Act, individuals attest to their citizenship by checking a box on registration forms. However, the SAVE Act proposes significant changes, requiring prospective voters to furnish documentation proving their citizenship. Accepted forms of proof include a U.S. passport, a photo ID card issued with proof of citizenship, or a combination of a photo ID and supporting documents like a birth certificate.
For those lacking these documents, states would gain access to federal agency databases to verify citizenship status for voter registration purposes, according to the text of the bill. The bill also includes provisions to remove noncitizens from voter rolls and grants discretion to the Department of Homeland Security to deport noncitizens found to have illegally registered to vote.“
Sounds good to me. Most countries require voter ID - why shouldn't we? Who on earth would vote against this?
In fact, EVERY other country requires voter ID.
Democrats just can’t win without cheating.
And these other countries also make it easily accessible to get a voter ID. You, of course, conveniently deny this point, which is the problem. With your lot, it's always projection. Why did Alabama close down a bunch of DMV in poor areas when there wasn't a recession? Hmmm? Why are you against making voter IDs cheap and accessible?
Voter IDs ARE cheap and accessible.
Saying it doesn't make it true. But I love how writing it BOLD makes it more persuasive. How about doing a little research on the facts? You know, the bare minimum to have an opinion?
Show us all the exorbitantly expensive and inaccessible IDs towns across America.
Nope. We've already shown you some evidence. How about YOU do some research since you're so confident in your position.

Anonymous wrote:The current system prevents illegal immigrants and legal immigrants who are not citizens by providing a checkbox on voter registration forms for people to say that they are citizens. Beyond that no checking is done.

What the hell is Congress trying to regulate? They have zero jurisdiction over state and local elections.
It's like the GOP doesn't understand the Constitution.
It looks like the stopped pushing voter id after they figured out the current republican base would have trouble voting.
Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:This is a redundant law that accomplishes nothing new.
Non-citizens are already prohibited from voting by numerous laws and statutes, for example:
18 U.S. Code § 611: This federal law explicitly prohibits non-citizens from voting in federal elections, stating: "It shall be unlawful for any alien to vote in any election held solely or in part for the purpose of electing a candidate for the office of President, Vice President, Presidential elector, Member of the Senate, Member of the House of Representatives, Delegate from the District of Columbia, or Resident Commissioner, unless (1) the election is held partly for some other purpose; (2) aliens are authorized to vote for such other purpose under a State constitution or statute or a local ordinance; and (3) voting for such other purpose is conducted independently of voting for one of the offices referred to in this subsection."
National Voter Registration Act of 1993 (NVRA): This act requires that states provide voter registration forms that include an affirmation that the registrant is a U.S. citizen.
Help America Vote Act of 2002 (HAVA): This law mandates that first-time voters who register by mail provide identification to verify their identity and citizenship.
Also, the Constitution effectively limits voting to citizens.
This bill is redundant, accomplishes nothing new, wasted time and money, and was nothing but performative theater by the Republicans for no good reason other than to feed into their BS narrative that illegal aliens are "replacing" Americans at the polls and everywhere else. These false Republican claims have repeatedly been debunked and disproven. https://www.politifact.com/factchecks/2024/may/20/mike-johnson/mike-johnsons-false-claim-that-immigrants-paroled/
This is the fact.
"National Voter Registration Act of 1993 (NVRA): This act requires that states provide voter registration forms that include an affirmation that the registrant is a U.S. citizen."
And, in some states, the only affirmation that is required is the registrant checks a box. That's it.
So, yes - this law is needed.
We have upward of 20 million people in our country illegally. If only 1% of them voted in a federal election, that would be 200,000 illegal votes. Enough to change the outcome of races depending upon where these people reside.
Thank you. Facts matter.
