If there was a free, quick, easy test for other things that I could do at home I might do those too if I had symptoms relevant to the virus . Also, Covid has sucked for a couple members of the family so last time I got it I tested and then quarantined, wore a mask, etc. Also, there are some illnesses where it just doesn't seem right to knowingly expose others, like the flu, norovirus and IMO covid. Colds I'm not as worried about, but I'd prefer not to expose others to the most contagious days of covid if I can help it. And, it's a good reason to stay home from work.
Why are you treating colds different from covid? It's basically equivalent at this point, unless you're very old.

Why do people still test if they are not an extreme risk population -- work and schools no longer require, new variants are so contagious that masking at home is theater.
Using up old tests? More people aiming for paxlovid?
I'm all about people staying home when sick, are we keeping people home even when well but testing pos
Because it is not just an annoyance. It's a pretty lethal virus even when symptoms are mild. Just stop the nonsense, but I'm sure you won't. People need to mask again, right now.

You don't seem to understand what "mild" means.
I will explain to you what it means, since you don't understand. You may have neglible or even absent symptoms but the virus can still affect your heart, your lungs, and vascular system. Ask the thousands of people with cardiovascular issues such as afib, or blood clots in their lungs. Yet the infection felt like a bad cold.
