Most parents have to work, and use camps etc for childcare.

For those who SAH or have summers off, more flexibility or grandparent help- the kids often do camps etc anyway because no other kids are around to play with anyway. They are all at camp.

My mom was a SAHM and I went to 8 weeks of day camp every single summer from the time I was four years old, until I was 14 and old enough to work. I was not going to camp to use it as a daycare.

Oh ok. You're right. Kids aren't programmed today because their parents are working. They are all SAHMs who just can't deal. Glad you cleared that up.

A little boring here and there. I went to day and overnight camp up until I was 13 but they didn’t take up the whole summer. During non-camp time, it was slow but I wouldn’t say totally boring. Pool, hanging out with friends, rec centers family vacations.

As a teenager, I worked and did some summer college programs. I was pretty busy so there wasn’t a lot of downtime. When my friends and I started driving, we had a lot more freedom to do things at night.

In the 80s, parents didn’t schedule every minute. Mine were at work and I had to figure it out. I have my teen daughter in a few camps and we’ll go on vacation this summer but she’s going to have to learn how to figure out the downtime.

No, not necessarily. I know not everyone has the same situation, but it doesn't necessarily require a SAHM. Other relatives, neighborhood friends parents, older responsible teenage siblings, grandparents. This is how I was able to have these summers without a SAHM. And when I was old enough I stayed home myself.

Watched dirty dancing almost every day on vhs, rode my bike to the pool, read on the porch, evenings were lots of popsicles and freeze tag with neighborhood kids.
