My kid was there today also. What we have been told is it was a swatting event and they said they had a rifle and pipe bombs hence the police response and room to room sweeps. This has nothing to do with the kid from Monday and it was reported the call was not even local. You can go back in the thread and read all of this.

I am very upset by what happened today and Monday because the real overall problem and the absolute gut rage and desperation I feel is because in today’s society we cannot keep our kids safe. Not at school, the movie theater, a concert, college campus, in a kindergarten classroom, anywhere. We have made voting choices in this country that have led to this and here we are. We care more about weapons and glorifying violence and cowboys than we do the safety of our children.

The counties and schools and principals and police and parents- all of us-are all trying to survive this absolute insanity. It’s not working. Today was awful and I just feel absolute sadness.

Apparently it’s all fun and games until it happens to a Bethesda school?

There were like a dozen bomb threats in a week in MCPS earlier this year. We didn’t write outraged emails to our representatives because this kind of stuff just happens at schools.

Your student should ask around. My son has video of men with bullet proof vests and helmets and some seriously large guns (I'm sorry - I'm not a gun expert) coming into a classroom.
Kids were sitting at their desks while I assume these police were sweeping the room. I'm not against what the police were doing - just reporting what was happening.
I believe it was the AP Spanish exam.

The parent who copied the BCC listsrv on his letter to county council members also included a photo of a different police officer carrying his weapon.

I can assure you that these are not rumors and most of us would assume police are armed in a situation like this.

We've got two problems on our hands:
1) Kids are a little shaken by what happened today and the police presence
2) Kids are desensitized to all of this and we have another problem on our hands

Some junior at BCC was on Fox laughing about it all. He tried to compose himself after the reporter mentioned his laughing. He was probably a bad choice for the interview but he reflects a certain group who were probably more excited about school closing and are used to these types of events at BCC.

How do these logistics work? How do you know someone on the bus doesn't have bad intent if you don't know who the kid is? That seems like a bad idea to put kids and a driver captive on a drive home.

When they did this at Einstein last year, they searched bags before escorting them out.

I heartily concur with this email posted on the BCC listserve this afternoon by a BCC parent:

I am your constituent in Bethesda, and a registered Democrat. I also vote in all elections.

Twice this week there has been a serious issue related to school safety at BCC High School, where I have a child attending.

Monday there was a report of a student who brought a gun to school. Parents have received no info as to whether this student has been identified and what if any action has been taken.

Today parents received notification that the school is in lockdown and a parent sent me this photo from the school today (edit: photo of policeman with gun on campus)



In the fall, several BCC students were identified and charged as adults for a carjacking.

As parents we have little or no insight into what’s being done about this serious issue of safety that is undermining one of the best High Schools in what was one of the best school districts in the country. We do not hear about consequences for perpetrators who are ruining the opportunity for a safe and secure education for our children.

Instead we hear about police officers / school resource officers being removed from
Schools and something that is termed “restorative justice.” I’m not sure how effective these methods have been at keeping our schools and kids safe, but it seems that they are leaving something to be desired.

I respectfully ask that action on this serious issue be taken immediately by our elected officials. I would also appreciate immediate communication from you as to what your plans are, what steps MCPS, MCpD and the County are taking, and what consequences are for perpetrators of such incidents from the school system.

I have taken the liberty of sharing this message with the BCC and Westbrook neighborhood Listservs, which collectively include thousands of families, as I believe dozens or hundreds of other parents may feel the same way.
