They keep ‘popping up’ because they have a dedicated booster on the boards. It’s definitely improved since its days as a commuter school (truly), but frankly all the marketing is distasteful and desperate. Still not in the same league as the other big name Boston schools, gaming the system notwithstanding. Did a spring break tour nonetheless. No thanks.

I assume as most college acceptances are in (as we wait for Ivy Day) that a lot of parents and students are mulling their options, and quite a few are thinking of NEU. Since it gets almost 100,000 applications, many people have a vested interest in it.

Do they actually reject or do they just accept to different campuses / defer a semester? That was my understanding.

They reject. There are only 1,100 NU.in spots and 350 Oakland spots. NU.in has become so popular that it is almost as difficult to get in there as it is for Boston. It is simply a numbers game. 98,000 applications. 2,500 Boston spots, 1,100 NU.in, 350 Oakland with 350 Global Scholars (two semesters at two different campuses).

With a yield rate of 50% for Boston, NEU can be choosy.

I have a question. If NEU is such an amazing place, why can't it get below 40 on the rankings? In reality, the top schools have a consistent ranking history in the top 30, top 20, top 10. But NEU is odd in that they adjust their programs to the USNWR methodologies in an effort to game the rankings year after year. I guess what they are doing is legit, but still, it seems, well (as I mentioned earlier on this thread), sleazy.


Article that someone shared from a decade ago stated that many other top schools did the same thing with ranking strategies. Nothing new.

TODAY, NEU is a top 50ish college on Boston that has some demand. It can choose to be as selective as it wants, mad parents notwithstanding.
