It's a real outliner of a student who wants to go to Wise when they have been admitted to William & Mary and Virginia Tech. I mean, I'm glad you've found your people here, here on DCUM but it's got to be the same one or two people posting.

Students ordinarily do not choose the Wise option hoping they make it to UVA Charlottesville someday. Have you been hired to promote this option?

Lots of differences, starting with size. VT has maybe 2x the number of undergraduate students as UVa. If want Ag, UVa does not offer the degree. If want certain other majors, VT does not offer the degree. Both are fine, but they are not twins.

The schools are similar, but there are slight differences in their programs.
For example, VT’s physics program is more applied and has a stronger engineering focus, while UVA’s physics program is more theoretical.
So I think one school may be more suitable than the other depending on the student’s goals.

This was my kid's final two options. He wants to do finance, but also wants a broad range of classes in accounting, math, architecture, engineering, possibly real estate. Once we talked through what he's really interested in, I agreed with him that YiW was a much better option than W&M given that W&M doesn't offer classes in some of those areas. Even if he can't get McIntire (which seems very difficult for YiW kids), Econ+McIntire minor would give him a really good option and he'll be able to explore his interests in the other subjects. Sucks that he won't get a traditional first year experience, but he's been engaged in the IG group chat with other YiW kids (I think about 40+ in the chat now) and already feels like there's a lot of kids he'll vibe with.

DS isn’t very thrilled about missing the first year, but he’s considering it.
The other option is VT, but we can tell the school isn’t a good fit for him.

Anyone considering UVA YIW and William & Mary?

You will not know this until maybe June, but it's safe to assume 100 +/-15. I think that's the range for the last two cohorts.
Some kids will be pulled off wait lists at UVA and other schools, etc. so that will impact the final number. How many kids attend the Zoom call with the program director?

Does anyone have any idea how many will do YIW this year?

Would be nice for this cohort to start developing relationships for the journey ahead.

When my kid did this, the kids started a group chat after the first Zoom call with the program director. That's how many kids found their roommates and got to know each other. As far as I remember, the move in day and the welcome evening was really when the kids figured out their circles.

And yes, El Dorado rules!!

Man, this drive a few times in a year is gonna suck, but at least El Dorado has better mexican food than anywhere in this area.

Have you already received the YIW agreement for this year?
My son received the offer, and he marked as “yes,” but we haven’t received anything after that.

Yes, your son should have gotten a lot of stuff by now, including the YiW agreement. There also have been two zoom calls as well with the director of the program. I would email them if you haven't gotten anything. The YiW FAQ page says to contact Program Director Dr. McKnight at YearinWise@uvawise.edu for any questions.

I haven’t read all the responses but just want to say one of my son’s good friends did this and was totally fine but he already had friends at the UVA main campus (grounds). He’s also an introvert and doesn’t go out on the weekends so maybe that’s why he was fine with Wise.

A friend's kid did the year in Wise program, moved to UVA sophomore year, roomed with friends from the Wise program. Worked out well as far as I know.
