This. Emma in the series didn't show anything that would make his attraction to her make sense. She was unattractive, whiny, humorless, and aimless. Anne Hathaway did a much better job in this role. I will say that the series did get better after the first couple episodes. The actor who played Dex knocked it out of the park.

The actress who played Tilly did a great job. She was bubbly, fun, sensual. It was easy to see how a guy could be really attracted to Tilly. Looks don't have to be even, but generally there's something else like personality, money, accomplishments, responsibility, or *something* that makes the hot, wealthy person fall for the much less attractive one.

It makes me think of Never Have I Ever, where the traditionally hot guy falls for the girl (it’s only a coincidence that both women are Indian, it’s just what I’ve watched recently in this area). In that, it’s totally believable that Paxton would fall for Devi. They have great chemistry that makes him look beyond his usual circle. I didn’t buy it here, and agree with the PP who said that it was more believable for him to fall for Tilly.

(And I say traditionally hot, but I find all the women here attractive as well, just not what someone like Dex would go for without more chemistry.)

I think it’s believable even from first episode in that the backstory for character seemed to imply he had already slept with “most of the class and half the girls in the class below” so he would maybe be totally down with a one-night stand after graduation with the rando girl who obviously had a crush on him. He was shallow and expected nothing more than this.

And then he found himself oddly intrigued that she didn’t have sex with him…it made him want her a bit more even the next day. And she sort of challenged him with her snark and wit….and then they were alllllllmost about to sleep together at his place before his parents showed up so it was enough to leave him wondering and lasting but in the friend zone.

Ian was right that he completely took her for granted. But then I thought they did a good job of developing his true attraction over time.
Hated the ending, but I’m American, so…..

Because I definitely needed convincing too. He’s such a shallow egotistical pretty boy at the start that I have trouble believing he would have given her a second look. And her character seemed to feel that way too. So it’s interesting to me that the actress did too. AND it was beautiful the way she seemed to grow into her sense of self and eventually feel that she did deserve to be in his life. And even at times pitying him.

Now, now.

Agree that Emma was judgy and critical, and that made her annoying. But that wasn’t the actress, it was the scriptwriters who gave her those lines. Maybe the scriptwriters couldn’t do genuine humor. If they had given Emma some self-deprecating or actually funny lines, instead of all the snark, she would have been a lot more appealing.

I Loved this... binged in 2 sittings. And here to say I loved the casting because she is beautiful but not in a white traditional way which fits with the guy character hesitating for years. I thought the casting made the show much better than movie. Also their chemistry and finally amazing music. As a gen xer the show was a soundtrack of all my fav music over those years.
