We have been told that some just have a punchable face. Perhaps he was a Nazi?

This terrible story reminds me of the days of Bernie Goetz in NY. How has it come to this?

This. My friends car was stolen when she was doing a "do goody" errand. You can't make this stuff up.

These details are quite alarming. Gel pepper spray is the safest for on a train but you are pretty trapped with an assailant when it's moving. Hopefully they have the responsible person and he was the attacker in both incidents. Hate to think there is another guy on the loose.

Dining at a restaurant without being robbed with taxes and prices.
Gone are my days at my fave waterfront restaurant where I used to enjoy Italian dishes.
What can I do in DC is preparing my own Mediterranean meals with fresh seafood and home grown vegetables.

Drive your car without someone stealing your 4-month-old child.

I cannot imagine having this much anxiety over something that is unlikely to happen.

In any major metropolitan city in the world [London, Brussels, Madrid, Sao Paulo] you can be mugged. DC is not unique in that.

Aren’t you tired of chiming in to make such a stupid post?

First, DC has MUCH higher crime rates than many other cities in the country and western world. Second, and more importantly, where most US cities have had decreasing crime, DC has INCREASING crime. That shouldn’t be happening. It’s not a national trend. It’s DC specifically.

Finally - and this is really a you issue - why the F do you not care about whether people are safe where they live? Many of us like DC and want to live here IF it can be safe. Why the ever loving F**k should we not try to make it so? When, like I said, MANY other US cities are accomplishing that?

Would you accept sexual harassment at work? This is sexual violence. File a police report. When he attacks some kid, it will be on record the city did nothing. I'm so sorry that you were assaulted in this manner.

The man who attacked the daycare workers told them to go ahead and call the police because they won't do anything, so it's already common knowledge the city will do nothing. It is sexual violence but it's not considered a crime in DC if the offender is homeless and mentally ill.

Good Lord, this honestly sounds like a scene from a Frank Miller graphic novel.

If you need more proof that much of the skyrocketing crime is because kids know they can threaten to murder you with a gun, steal your car and nothing will happen to them, this article "Carjacking Is No Big Deal" from yesterday spells it out:

https://www.hillrag.com/2023/12/06/carjacking-is-no-big-deal/

Eyeopening and shocking.

I to this day have no idea why carjacking does not come with a 20 year mandatory minimum sentence regardless of the ages of all perpetrators. Stealing a car should come with a 15 year mandatory minimum. See how quickly the stats go down once we start throwing these kids in jail and throwing away the key.

The 1993 carjacking law is still on the books, with hefty mandatory minimums, but in recent years, laws have been changed re: juveniles. You are right, it had a tremendous and swift impact curbing carjacking when passed.

Just outside DC, it's not safe to ride the metro in Arlington on a weeknight lest you be robbed at knifepoint and perhaps sexually assaulted. Link to DC? Decriminalizatio of fare evasion by DC Council has made the whole system less safe. Spillover. Carry pepper spray ladies. Wear shoes you can run in.

From the article, "restorative justice" - what the hell is that supposed to mean?

"Restore" and "Justice" would, or should mean making the victim whole again. If a 15 year old stole a car and it ended up shipped off via the Port of Baltimore, how is that kid going to HONESTLY get the money to provide an equivalent car for the victim? They can't. If some kid beat someone to the point where they now have a permanent disability, how is that kid going to make the victim whole again? Or even if they didn't cause a permanent disability, what about the trauma? They can't make the victim whole. If someone gets killed? Forget about it. Crap like "restorative justice" can only have any actual meaning in petty, non-violent crimes.

Agree, PP, but former AG Karl Racine said RJ was appropriate in cases of homicide. It's a pretext for dismantling the system. RJ is big on victim participation, what would Racine have be used, a medium? Ouija board?
