Pay to play at private schools. No joke some DC families do this.
Why would it be a joke? One reason we are sending our kids to private is because after-school sports are mandatory and several teams are no-cut. I would like my kids to continue being active in HS even if they aren’t super talented.

In high school, my oldest knew he wasn’t going to make the HS baseball team so tried a new sport freshman year. He joined the crew team, worked hard, became team captain senior year and was named MVP by the coach his senior spring season. He learned that he could do hard things, developed leadership skills, was part of a boat that raced at the national level, and made some very close friends and met mentors that have been helpful now and will be good for him in the future.
Second son was cut freshman year, devastated by that, and almost quit sports entirely. He talked to a friend who was trying rugby and liked the coach. He went to some practices and became a rugby player. He, too, worked hard, earned a starting position his second season, and won the coaches’ award his senior year. He has made some phenomenal friends and developed a personal toughness that I don’t think he would have if not for rugby and trying something new. He may play club rugby in college.
I believe that not continuing with baseball in HS were good things for both young men. There have been stories about baseball team politics that I’m glad my sons avoided. They had wonderful high school experiences in part because of sports. They also learned that change isn’t bad and trying something new can be positive.

HS sports back in my day were not 2.5 hours per day 5-6 days per week. Parents were not spending entire weekends at tournaments in depressing locations eating bad food. The majority of HS players will not be recruited. Your child is better off doing rec and spending time on studies and other interests.
I don’t see a problem with school sports. It’s right after school, same location, and parents don’t have to drive them to games.
Club sports are more like cheerleading and dance competition groups. They spend whole weekends at a chain hotel to perform their five minute routine. The amount of time spent on traveling to locations, waiting around, hotel, traveling home is way too much to justify. There needs to be more local programs. A lot of rec programs stop at middle school.
High school sports practices and games are not right after school, LOL. Gym and field use is scheduled in shifts amongst all the teams. Your kid could have the 7:30-9:30 practice time slot and you are driving back and forth.
That’s too bad your school needs to do that. We have massive amounts of fields so we don’t need to do that. Along with basketball, cheerleading, volleyball and others are indoors it works out well. I picked my daughter at 6 pm most days. Same with my son who was in the musicals and plays.
Good for you but that's not the case for many schools in the DMV.
Dying to know which schools around here have "massive" amounts of fields.

That's right but kids often cannot make the high school teams without club experience.
