My two cents: people pay a lot of money to wrap their snowflakes in a preppy bubble at WF. I think that’s weird.
That’s more a commentary on your circle than Wake. My left leaning daughter is very happy there.
It’s not a friends and family circle, pp.
My work provides a big network, and there’s a lot of interesting observations about affluent whites sending their kids south to affluent white bubbles.
I’m glad your kid is enjoying it.
But the thread is more about how odd some parents and students find a campus with a rich, white preppy vibe.
Ftr, I’m a bleeding heart liberal.
It’s not an affluent white bubble, how quick you are to discount a third of the student body.
Eh, at least some of the 7.5% Latinos probably appear white, rich, and preppy.
That leaves roughly 12.5% black and Asian plus 3+% who identify as mixed.
So, not a lot of noticeable diversity.
Wow, you are a weirdo. When the facts don’t agree with your perceptions, invent some new ones.
?
ICYMI: many Latinos are white.
Have you ever filled out paperwork? I’m non-Hispanic Caucasian…as compared with the Hispanic caucasians. That’s how demographics work because…Latino is an ethnicity, not a skin color.
This post is about optics.
The vibe at WF is rich, white preppies.
Using Latino numbers to bolster diversity is a stretch since most Latinos are…white.

You left out something. I'll fill in the missing word for you: My white, left leaning daughter is very happy there.
As her friends from high school who are not white also attending. From Baltimore, a majority black city. Imagine that.
Which prep school did she go to? And did she live in Roland Park?

I understand what OP’s daughter means. It’s the type of white at WF that stands out, not the percentage. It’s country club, Tory Burch flats, blond highlights, mom and grammy were both debutantes, really rich southern white. Some of the other schools name checked in this chat are just as white when looking at percentages on paper, but the white students at those schools have pink hair and nose rings. This is neither a slam on WF or a credit to the other schools, btw - just an observation.
And I’ve known both very bright WF grads and boring, dim ones. YMMV.
I have a child at Wake and have yet to meet anyone who fits this stereotype.

Finally, an honest, level-headed post. Thank you.

So it wasn’t a healthy cross-section of America? It’s so much better at a place like Oberlin, where future factory foremen, violinists, military leaders, social workers, and accountants all roll up the sleeves of their vastly different garments and learn how to co-exist with a wide array of necessary people.
