We're happy to have constructive criticism of authority. However, this thread is suggests that a President (or perhaps more broadly, the executive branch) has sufficient authority through "power" and "regulations" to do something about challenges facing the airline industry. The reality, simpleton, is that neither the President nor the executive branch has this unilateral power (and you darn well know that Republicans don't want the government to have it). Regulations are like guide rails but they don't always determine business practices and even then, they have to have an enforcement mechanism to be effective. Of course, when any consumer-friendly regulation is proposed, it takes years to become a law (look up rulemaking and administrative procedure) and even then, it is fought tooth and nail by lobbyists and politicians who are funded by said lobbyists and corporations to dilute it and render it ineffective. Also, as far as travel concerns go, you're looking at the symptoms of a highly complex system that is stressed due to a variety of factors. There isn't one simple fix where a President can waive a wand and fix things. But you knew that, amirite?

We are a capitalist society. Nothing is going to change in the airline industry or any other industry unless consumers vote with their money. American Airlines doesn't care if I am late for my connection.
I just think it's ridiculous to be "thanks BIDEN". I don't see how the potus really has control of air travel. Sure I understand we have a TSA, FAA, etc. But I don't see them as being responsible for whether my flight is on time.

Now when I travel in the US I expect problems. Europe not so much. It’s reliably delayed or canceled. Baggage issues haven’t been my issue but significant delays and cancellations with not effort to help. Canceling a flight from Cincinnati to DC and not have any solutions at all is not ok. A flight the next day to Chicago is not a real solution but that is what we weee offered. 8 hour delay in Seattle. 3 hours in the runway at Dulles. So long that a passenger claimed a medical emergency to get off the plan. It’s bananas now.
I'm guessing you don't fly in Europe much...
Actually I do and stand by what I said. I don’t specifically blame Biden but it definitely seems like crappy travel experiences have become ok. The fines against American Airlines show that it has gotten worse. I suspect that if there were more penalties and more accountability for failures, then it would improve. One thing I see with the Secretary of Transportation is a lack of forceful leadership. When he engages in an issue, he does so late and in a “fact finding” way. He needs to enforce the regulations before bad crap happens. I work for the federal government and have done so for 2 decades. Agency leaders set a tone and his tone is one of mild interest. He should be tackling the degradation of our air travel, rail travel and infrastructure. Getting money via an infrastructure bill doesn’t do much unless there is someone making sure the money is spent efficiently to address the issues. Pete is not a strong leader. I think he isn’t really interested.
And you think that anyone nominated by a GOP president would do what, precisely?
It’s worse now than it was before COVID. A lot worse and we’ve only had 1 post Covid president.
This is just really weird disinformation to be pushing. Did somebody get bored of the other lies?
It is not disinformation. I know you love that word and think it invalidates facts but it doesn’t. Just like it isn’t disinformation that Biden’s Secretary of Transportation routinely avoids commercial airlines. It’s a fact.
It really is. US has better on time performance than Europe. It’s weird to argue otherwise.
You KNOW they fudge the numbers. They routinely claim the flights take longer than they do, they leave late, “make up time in the air” and arrive on time-ish. But when the carefully craft facade gets slightly off tilt, the whole thing falls apart. Delaying my flight 6 hours, then canceling it and relisting it as a new flight and calling it on time is NOT honest. If you actually flew at all you would know the reality.

They do that in Europe, right?
Isn’t the socialism?
So we’re pro socialism, now?
I’m just asking questions
Who talked about ownership? The federal govt already regulates them, for better or worse. If they already regulate them, then why are they getting worse? It means Biden and his transportation secretary suck at their jobs.
You do understand that regulating something, does not mean you run something? Right?
Like the government regulates many industries, but doesn’t actually run them.
You do get that? Right?
dp - Yes regulation determines how something runs. And if the Airline can't execute, they get fined. Good lord the mental acrobatics to get out of any accountability are impressive here.
