Of course it "can." People just won't like how: lengthen the school day. Changing classes has nothing to do with it. Elementary students change classrooms for things. It's the length of each class period that's different when you get to middle school. So, either knock off a few minutes from every period or extend the day 15 minutes to allow for a 15-minute break.

This is silly. It is very common for school systems to have 6-8 middle schools.

It's not silly at all. In my area they willingly admit that they've put 5th and 6th grade in MS strictly due to space. Which isn't a very good reason imo.
