This. The kids I know who've gone to U of SC, Tennessee, Indiana, Ohio, Delaware did so because they didn't get into UVA or VT.


I am from maryland it is the same in our neighborhood. Kids didn’t get into UMD and they go to Tennessee, South Carolina, Pitt, Delaware, Indiana, Ohio State. One kid got into Michigan but not UMD (w school)

Ever since moving to NoVa suburb all I hear is how great Va Colleges are. It's like these people have no other life experience. They've been given a script. They have no independent thoughts. Insular, provincial while being obnoxious.

OOS flagships refer to public schools.

IMO then it's worth it. Otherwise, I'm not sure it's worth OOS for a school that isn't as "good" for that field of study compared to the in state pubic.

UVA is ranked at #3 for public schools in US News. VT is ranked #23. So is your kid going to a public school ranked between #4 and #22?

UVA is ranked at #3 for public schools in US News. VT is ranked #23. So is your kid going to a public school ranked between #4 and #22?

Kid just wanted to get away from Montgomery County kids. Got into UMD, but we let her go to OOS Public. Actually, has a very good reputation in the field she wants to study..

+1 Yes. Waitlisted at WM, but accepted at Florida and a few others. So, going to one of those.

So the compromise is a great school like Wisconsin even if you get in to UMD. Or if don’t get in, maybe UVM or UMass or Pitt. We thought our kids had *earned* choices. They had worked extremely hard in high school in FCPS. They weren't getting into UVA/WM. High ranked schools out of state wanted them. Very empowering. A great student from FCPS will get merit aid from out of state schools, and have choices.
