Seriously! In our neighborhood, it’s pretty standard. Our crew does a lot of the neighborhood and the yards are pretty big and spread apart. If you’re new to a neighborhood like ours, I can see how it might initially surprise you to see someone sitting in your yard simply because nobody ever just wanders onto these properties. We’re in a relatively isolated area far from random foot traffic, so you just don’t expect to see anyone hanging around. But it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realize, oh, the guy taking a moment in my yard is part of the lawn crew that’s been grinding outside for the past hour! You could mow the grass yourself - problem solved!

I’ll bet OP is an immigrant from one of those countries where they treat hired help like an inferior species.

Our lawn crew does this, and I just feel badly that our trees don’t offer great shade. It’s hot out there! Our neighbor’s lawn crew sometimes sits on our property line when taking a break. Yesterday one guy was smoking, and it came in through my window. I didn’t love that, but whatever. Eating a sandwich mid-day under a tree? Seems very unkind to begrudge someone for doing something so routine and necessary.

OP, my gosh, they work hard. It is hot. You should be taking them some lemonade or sweet tea with some chocolate chip cookies.

We actually do offer water and coffee if we have a crew over early in the morning.

I have someone doing something on my property multiple times a week. Water and coffee are rarely accepted but frequently offered. It’s just how it goes.

I am an American (born here) but I have lived in many places around the world, and this kind of attitude seems uniquely American to me, in the worst way.

People have this hang up on property rights and trespassing. It’s ridiculous. Stringently enforcing your property lines against all intruders is so damned stupid. They shouldn’t be causing damage, but if they aren’t, why do you care if they’re sitting in your yard.

Thank you PP for not freaking out about strangers sitting on bench and to this PP for noticing how bizarre Americans’ obsession with exerting their property rights is.

You clearly don’t have enough domestic help to know the rules. If they’re sitting under a tree near their truck, this is totally inbounds. On the days they’re working at your house, they’re your employees. If you had a full time gardener, could you not imagine him taking his lunch under a tree? That’s how it works.

I'd be fine with it, especially because I know which neighbor would disapprove.
