I take one or two expensive items per trip (usually 3 trips a week) and I simply don't scan it. Yesterday I walked with $22 of Peets coffee beans for free. Last week I didn't scan $16 of British Cheddar.
If they want me to bring my own bags, check myalf out, pack all my things, they can either adjust price to account for my labor or I will.
So you are a common thief/shoplifter. I hope you get caught.
You all realize grocery stores operate on very thin margins (pennies on most items). And from those slim margins, they have to pay rent, pay staff, pay liability and health insurance, electricity, etc. You want to turn the suburbs into food deserts like the inner cities?

I've seen people do this but never figured out how it works exactly. Can someone explain it in more detail?
You scan your Giant card when you pick up the scanner. Then you scan (and bag) your groceries while you shop around the store. When you're ready to check out, you push a button on the scanner and it pops up a barcode that you then scan at the self-checkout. It pulls your whole order up on the screen quickly and you proceed to pay as normal. It's super easy.
I heard you have to have an ID to activate it now, is that true? I tried scanning the barcode on my phone/on the Giant app and it wouldn't let me.
I have not needed an ID, no. I use my Giant card that's on my keyring (I haven't tried it with the mobile app card).
NP. Yay, yet another app to load. Some of us loathe everything having to be done via app. Oh well, we know we're in the minority but it's just another thing that adds to the suckiness of the shopping experience.
Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:Are you referring to Silver Spring/EW Highway? Or is this now a problem all Giants? I had the same immediate reaction. My workaround is to grab a self-scanner by the produce section and use that. I often have more than 20 items but no one has ever confronted me because the check-out with a self-scanner is so quick. Anyway, OP, just want to say I empathize.
OP again. I usually go to the McLean Giant so it sounds like this is happening at all DMV Giants.
Same. I have stopped going there. The disgusting smell near the meat department and the annoying scanner were too much. Wegmans in Tysons now. Or Balducci’s.

I’m really over this everywhere. Companies keep finding more ways to put the burden of service onto customers while simultaneously increasing prices.
This is so true. I think we should demand an employee discount. We are working at the store.
Plus the produce is half rotten all the time. Gross.

It's done due to crime. You think Giant really wants to make the self-checkout experience more annoying for customers? They have to, because of theft and no prosecution by the district attorneys.
Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:Blame your political leaders. This was done due to a rise in theft at retailers, and the local governments not prosecuting the thieves.
Bullcrap. Self-checkout is the choice of the retailer and is obviously more prone to theft. There is an easy solution - bring back checkers.
“Bring back checkers” isn’t happening, MeeMaw.
Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:A sign at our local Giant said that the system updates are due to recent increased thefts so I believe the changes are at all Giants.
+1 you can avoid these problems by using the scanner
Giant could avoid all these problems by staffing their checkout lanes with actual people.
The self-checkout was fine when it was more convenient for the customer - i.e. - you needed a gallon of milk and it was faster to scan and pay on your own. But now it's just a degradation of service versus a convenience for the customer and a way of depriving a person of a job by the corporation. I feel like starting a movement to boycott self-checkout.
Well, that’s not going to happen. And your last sentence is Big Boomer energy (and before you say it, yes, even if you’re not chronologically a Boomer).

Because we're not lazy.
No, you just like to whine and complain.
