If tweens/ teens insist on super-tight spandex or yoga pants, many of them are not aware they really need to wear a thong under them.

I had same reaction when kids said someone was preppy. I looked for the izod with collar up, pinks and light greens with matching socks and headband- nope, leggings and Nike socks, etc.

My daughter calls this “preppy” (not what it used to mean!)

She and her friends wear hoodies and converse. No matching sets please. Lots of grey and black.

The pajama pants aren't actually pajama pants though. My DD has two pairs, both branded (one from a summer camp, one from a vacation destination). She has never worn them to sleep in. They are just flannel pants -- if they were a solid color no one would even identify them as PJ pants. Back in the early 90s, girls at my college -- mostly the prep school kids -- were wearing these to class and kids in my suburban NoVa high school were wearing all kinds of ridiculous things to school that we all now laugh about, so it's not like Rome is now falling.

Yep. I actually think the PJ pants might have originated as a prep school thing. We used to wear them under our kilts in the 90s.

I still used to discourage my kids from wearing them out to public places but came around to the conclusion that that is a ridiculous battle to fight in the scheme of things. They are extremely popular with my high school kid and their friends and it started in middle school.

Hollister, Brandy Melville for tops, American eagle, pac sun for jeans/casgos. Urban outfitters and true religion if you don’t mind spending more money. Skims is popular but maybe more for high school. Sometimes they find things at garage and tilly’s.

I would stay away from bright/crazy patterns, especially on pants. Mostly just generic colors. If you’re not looking to spend a lot of money on shoes and clothes, I know Walmart has some good stuff, like shoes similar to Nike air forces (just white leather shoes). As long as they look similar it shouldn’t be a problem.


I would never recommend Walmart or Target for clothing or shoes. They are boxy and unflattering.

For just a little more you can take a trip to the Mall and get an idea of,what is out there. American Eagle, Madewell, Holliston all pretty basic. Adidas is great for the athleisure wear, more sporty and comfortable. Also Uniqlo has a variety of basic cute clothing. Offline by Aerie has excellent comfortable clothes geared towards tweens/teens and has great sales.

I wouldn’t recommend Lululemon because moms and grandmoms wear it doing their errands every day. They stay out of the teen stores I mentioned for the most part.


You must not know any MS girls. They are obsessed with Lululemon and all wear it.


Not mine and her friends! But they attend a large, lower SES, diverse middle school where brands don't seem to matter much.

DD is in 6th. The kids coming out of school are wearing running shorts, and maybe a little longer. Sweatshirts, hoodies, university tshirts.

I got mine leggings, and she decided she didn’t like them bc she has to change for PE and they are a pain.

I recently got her some loose fitting parachute pants(what we called them growing up) that can cinch at the ankle if she wants. Hoping she wears them once it gets colder.

This! My kid doesn’t want to wear pj pants to school but in a school that includes shorts with butt cheeks hanging out and crop tops that I would call a sports bra, I’d be totally fine with flannel pajama pants.


I actually asked DD if she wanted some pajama pants that I saw. She didn't, but I'd be thrilled if she did. I'm just glad she doesn't wear those shorts with butt cheeks hanging out or tops that are barely more than pasties.

Sounds better than the belly shirts and tube tops I see so many in, pared with something entirely too short and too tight on the bottom, now that's trashy. Tight pants loose shirt, tight shirt loose pants/longish loose skirt is the way to go.

In my country, formal wear typically exposes our midriffs (also many casual wear items for the girls).

This is fine and is not a problem at all. It is also more comfortable to wear in the hot climates, like here, in the summers.


In India teens do not have as large boob development in the US, so you will not see much else in India. In the US, unfortunately some crop tops allow one to see more of the boob area. I really don't know how to put it nicely.


Underboob and sideboob are what some of these girls aim for.


If this is the case then this would not be an acceptable form of fashion garment for the girl to wear. Yes the mother should step in to stop this sort of thing.

This is a very different situation however from a tasteful girls fashion garment where the midriff can be seen such as almost any sari.

Yeah. My DD 8th grade wears pajama pants a lot but (I don’t tell her this) I am secretly glad this is what she is adamant about and not the other crazy stuff I see.
