I was coming to say this. There are plenty of solutions to this problem that don't involve fake vacations where family members are free labor. OP, maybe your DH could look into farmers in the area who will hay the land for your in laws or as another pp suggested someone who will do it for access to hunt on the land. Your inlaws are making this unnecessarily complicated and sound like they are being a**holes about it. It's really not your problem but perhaps for future family harmony you should encourage your DH to help them figure out another solution.

Thanks for the update. I’m happy for your kids, but it stinks that you won’t get the alone time.

I have posted in defense of Sally ( ), and now I am posting in congratulations to you, OP, for having picked an excellent partner! That's a great short-term outcome, and I hope your family enjoys the peace. Hopefully it leads to improved long-term outcomes with this part of the family, too.

I'm gonna hijack with my own story...
A coworker I know married a rwnj who believes all the black people who live in dc, whom he is terrified of, are going to march from DC to the Loudoun suburbs to murder white people. He bought land in WV to escape to. There was a store-bought shed on it and he plans for he and his wife to "retire" to this shed that has no electricity or running water and is the size of, well, a shed. He spent a lot of time cutting down trees and planting new trees. He's also a hoarder of all things but particularly guns and ammo. They spent every weekend and holiday for years doing things to this shed and mowing the land etc. We were invited to visit so spouse and I along with our very young kids could help. No way in hell.


A store-bought shed?! They are going to freeze their butts off in the winter. He sounds senile or crazy or both.
