My middle school child is an outstanding reader, so she placed in Advanced when she took the placement test and only had to do a few units before she finished comprehension.

She finished word study a few weeks after that.

Grammar, however, has taken her all of seventh grade so far to finish because she placed in Foundational, so she's had to do almost all the units. She said she is on the last part of the last level now, and she expects to finish this week.

As a parent of an AAP child who has always been an outstanding reader, reading 3-6 grade levels ahead since age 4, I had no idea that my child was struggling with grammar so much, so I am grateful to Lexia for identifying that need and helping her through it.

DD's seventh grade history and English teachers are the first teachers who have held her accountable for her grammar in her writing, and who,have actually taught her why her mistakes were mistakes. I am crediting both Lexia and those two teachers for helping my child grow so she can become a better writer. I've tried to help her with writing at home, but shes always been extremely resistant to my feedback, so I am glad Lexia and good teachers are helping her so much.

As a parent, I see a lot of value in the program when it's paired with good instruction from teachers.

I was chatting with my son today and, out of the blue, he told me he had read some really interesting stories on Lexia and then proceeded to tell me about them. He’s in 8th grade. It was realy cute, but it made me think of DCUM and all the hate on technology. My son is not a big reader, so the fact that he found enjoyment on the Lexia platform warms my heart.

My kids have both progressed a lot on Lexia over the past year and my older child says it has really helped her. Both of my kids read a ton of books, it's not one or the other.

Our school has asked to not do Lexia at home. So, I haven't seen how it looks. But my kid loves working on it at school.
Is it possible to take a look at Lexia from Schoology website? I have never tried that.

I work with Lexia every day in FCPS. There are definite pros & cons with this program:

Cons - Takes away direct instruction time, because any computer program does…powering up, finding a charging cable, logging into the app, clicking into the right learning strand, occasional glitches, etc. And as someone else said, this may leave only a few minutes for actual use of the system. If they don’t have a laptop or charger (or they choose to open Lexia but not engage with it), they may sit and do nothing during this time. Some units (or reading passages) can get boring for kids of ALL levels, so they zone out, make a mistake, and then have to recirculate through the entire lesson again, creating frustration! Many adults have not learned the formal grammar concepts in Lexia (and are leading very successful lives, by the way!), so they may have limited ability to help with certain sections.

Pros - Offers tailored instruction based on level, with just-in-time instruction. Ensures that students really understand a concept before moving forward. Generates immediate, specific data, if teachers choose to use it. Provides specific lessons for direct instruction by teacher if student continues to struggle.

Overall I would like the system more if it were the only screen time the kids were getting. It is certainly better than many learning programs out there. But for many of the English language learners or SPED kids, I’m not sure the grammar unit is super helpful or relevant. The AAP kids should be able to fly through the program, as long as they stay engaged with it, but there is value for all. Why ANY school system would encourage kids NOT to use a learning program at home is beyond me. Not required as homework is fine, but I can assure you that if a kid wants to work on Lexia at home (instead of other screen time), s/he will only benefit!

Overall, I would change MANY things in FCPS before I would scrap Lexia. But it does take up class time, and as soon as you let kids open a laptop, they find ways to navigate away from the designated site. 😔
