Sounds like a way to encourage cheating out of fear of not making the cut. Teaches them how to game the system. Give me a class full of kids that are excellent in some subjects and decent in others. I fear we are creating a generation of grade grubbing, burned out, back stabbing neurotic robots.
Way to put down the kids who get the good news. We know from this forum that a lot of people are getting As, taking APs, and are involved.
They admit the best of the group that applies and it just so happens that lots of great kids apply.

How can you start to make any kind of plans? Seems like a giant game and we are tired of playing. Applied to a good balance of schools.
790M/780V SAT
4.0UW/4.7W
All the usual APs with 4-5s
Strong application with true passion project and 4 year community leadership/volunteer positions
Great LORs
Counselors are stumped
Overall just a strong, smart, passionate student who has worked his tail off in high school and is NOT feeling the love. Maybe bc last name is literally at the end of the alphabet and people get tired reading apps??? Who knows. It's hard to respect the game when you have no idea what the rules are.

GPA is low for UVA unless that is top 5% in the class.
Hmm, don’t know the class rank. Not placing blame at all but guidance counselor all but called it a sure thing because of the NMS commendation.
UVA and VT were in the Washington Post article saying NMS doesn’t hold weight with them.
well then what actually does hold weight with them? I have been reading the admission blogs from time to time and they some come across as quite condescending.
Grades and most rigorous classes offered at your school - that is the most rigorous classes possible in the five core courses every year. And four years of foreign language. That's what UVA cares about.
