They looked for a weapon with metal detectors. I suppose there officers are going to say they thought he had a weapon - and let's be honest, everyone has a weapon so it's a reasonable thought.

The body cam may be helpful here, but, in the woods at night, it may not show anything.
in the dark the flash of a cell phone can look like a weapon. Officers have to make a split second decision.

And they should always err on the side of not killing people.

+1000. No, It’s not ok to kill unarmed people, even if they committed a crime.

For those asking what he shoplifted, it was a pair of designer sunglasses.

It appears he had no weapon.

So just let them run off with the stuff?

In every retail job I've worked, that is the policy.

And now look where we are.

If more criminals were shot for stealing will stealing slow down?

Yeah. Enforcement is enforcement. Lack of enforcement is lack of enforcement.

I hope they go to prison. You don’t shoot unarmed people for shoplifting, period. At a minimum they should be fired for incompetence.

You are everything that is wrong with our criminal justice system and the reason why crime of all types continues to increase in this country. He wasn’t shot because he was shoplifting and he wasn’t a victim. He was shot, because when the police tried to apprehend for shoplifting, he ran. He was a lifelong criminal with a long and violent history. The police shouldn’t have to risk their lives chasing him into the woods only to have him pull out a weapon and kill them. No sympathy for this POS.

Exactly. No question about it.
Who is telling criminals that running from cops might be a good idea? Where does this come from?

Spoken like somebody who has no idea how law enforcement works. There was no threat to life. The Chief of Police said they have no located a weapon. The man was running from the cops who coincidentally keeping killing unarmed people.

With the increase in gun violence at Tysons, with the recent armed carjackings in Fairfax County, I expect there's a push to come down hard on crime here. DC, Maryland, Loudoun County may be fine with skyrocketing crime statistics but we are not.

Go crime somewhere else.

Hit us up when your kid pockets a lipgloss. It’s not right. There should be punishment. But death? This man is dead. Also, did they find the stolen item. The news said he set off the sensor alarm. I’m sure nobody here has done that .. for example while wearing the old Ann Taylor loft clothes with the sewniin alarm tag that you didn’t cut off. 💥 💥

If you are comfortable with gunfire and prefer crime, DC is right over there. Have fun.

At this point, good. Tysons has been plagued with shootings, thefts, fights, etc. for the past 2 years. I hope this incident will deter the criminals who are now coming in droves to commit acts of violence at the mall. I go there with my family. I will not mourn the loss of another criminal who tried to rob the mall and put innocent lives in danger. He made his choice. And it turned out to be a very bad one.

I get that you're concerned about safety. But do you understand that shoplifting shouldn't result in an execution?

Being shot while resisting arrest is not “an execution.” Committing crimes and fleeing from the police is an inherently risky thing to do, as in the chaos of such events it’s quite foreseeable that the police can believe themselves threatened and need to take action. Obviously what the bodycam footage shows is important here.

Yes, that pretty much is.

Sunglasses

~reasoning needed~ If you can’t see the difference between killing someone in cold blood and killing someone in the context of a struggle caused by the decedent’s own wrongful conduct, there is no helping you. I wouldn’t even bother to respond, except this view is quite dangerous and is causing significant problems. It’s a fully generalized argument against policing: because it’s too dangerous for the criminals, the cops shouldn’t pursue suspects or try to subdue those resisting arrest. The implication of this is that people just need to accept a vastly higher property crime rate than they are comfortable with. That won’t work and it won’t end well.

+1. A known perp to police evading arrest after committing multiple crimes. I have no tears for him. And particularly after what happened yesterday in Orlando with the murder of a 9 year old, two journalists and a 20 year old woman, I would hope that police continue to step up the presence at Tysons. The violent crimes in this country have gotten out of hand.
