We're doing this to ourselves electing people who deliberately keep madmen on the streets to kill. At least the people of Albemarle County were lucky to have him go kill somewhere else.
Isn't it amazing how many of the mentally-ill and dangerous homeless aren't from here? Can we stop being a magnet for this sort?
How do you know he is from Charlottesville? There is a pattern of DC residents committing violent crimes in college towns around the country, as we saw at the University of Alabama
It sounds like he’s actually lived in DC for a while:

Yup. Looks like the instigating factor here wasn’t guns at all but drug abuse. For all the liberals who promote decriminalization of drugs, this is the predictable result. Drug induced psychosis leading to eruptions of violence.
People aren't ready to look at the reality of "harmless" drugs.
I've never once heard of anyone going on a psychotic shooting rampage after using legal, inspected, controlled and regulated cannabis. But don't let the facts get in your way.
That you have not heard of it does not mean it has not happened and could not. Marijuana is, for a significant number of people, not a benign amusement. It has been linked to psychosis.
When mixed with other substances, sure. By itself most people just become more mellow and relaxed. The point of regulation would be that it is controlled to remain unadulterated and of known properties.
Shut. The F. Up.
“Recent research suggests that smoking high-potency marijuana every day could increase the chances of developing psychosis by nearly five times compared to people who have never used marijuana.”

Never heard of Charles Allen before today but he’s not a person to blame here. Blame lax gun laws (a uniquely American issue) and lack of mental health services.
He actually shares the blame:
Criminal code revision easier on car jacking and less time for violent offenders
Leading proponent of Youth Rehabiliation act that hides violent records
Pushing million to “violence interruptors” where all studies show no real efficacy
Second chance act proponent
Blamed the city for not cleaning leaves sooner when kids were lighting them on fire.
Basically he is a weak on crime politician pushing woke criminal justice reform that actually sucks.
This. Charles Allen is DC's biggest advocate for violent criminals, drug dealers and homeless vagrants. How dare regular people ask for basic public safety!

Yep. I know this is veering off topic but I listened to a high school administrator this week express great frustration at the severe adverse effect decriminalization of marijuana has had on high schoolers and how there are virtually no treatment programs to help HS kids who aren't full blown drug addicts but are really struggling with excessive marijuana use.
I voted against legalization. Very predictable outcome.

Agree. Why hasn’t shooter been identified? I’m guessing either homeless or a catch-and-release.
Isaiah Trotman, 31, of Washington, DC, was identified by investigators as the gunman, and was arrested on charges of first degree murder while armed, kidnapping while armed and assault with a dangerous weapon, police said

I don't see a record on DC Sup Ct but those do not seem like the actions of a 1st time offender. Did he recently arrive in DC from elsewhere like the guy who bashed a baby in the face with a brick on Capitol Hill?
There’s a Washington Post article about him. Apparently, he was pretty amazing. Sounds like some sort of mental health crisis. He was a competitive swimmer in HS. Got a scholarship to Auburn U and graduated with a degree in finance. Served in the Air National Guard. Moved to DC. Bought a half million dollar house. Had two cars and an IT job. Paid his taxes. Something happened after Christmas. Inside of his house went from well kept to graffitied. No car. No phone. Disheveled. Then this.
He was arrested twice, one dropped and one resulting in a plea of guilty of possession with intent to sell methamphetamine. Some domestic issues with a girlfriend, which seem to have gone both ways - him to her and her to him.
Unlike much of the speculation, seems like he was a really successful guy before serious mental illness set in.
Trotman has a few arrests for DV and for violent/erratic behavior and use/possession of meth and marijuana. More info on the PA arrest for which he was to be sentenced in April at link. The way meth is currently cooked is linked to psychosis and severe mental illness. It is also a driver of public living in open air drug encampments. See Atlantic article linked in this thread.

This is not indicative of SMI, the timing is too short. It's much more clear that it was a drug issue.
