Jesus.

As an early elementary teacher this wouldn’t shock me. I’ve seen very young children full of rage that goes way beyond developmentally appropriate frustration.

and these kids are in normal classes, disturbing the other kids. My god, if this kid shot the teacher on purpose can you imagine how the kid might've treated the defenseless kids?

Winsome Sears Tweeted the following:
“We pray for the teacher who was shot in Newport News. How has life become so devalued? What has happened to us as a society that a six year-old wants to harm their teacher? We have lost our moral compass, and it's affecting our children.”

How dare she ask those questions. Does she not look in the mirror? Remember her campaign ad:

I hope so. I hope every family and every staff member sues the district. I'd do it for the inevitable PTSD. I'm unsure, to be honest, how they expect staff or students to return.

Teachers, here's a piece of advice for you if you haven't already been doing this. When you have a student with serious behavioral or emotional issues, keep records of your communications with administration and the "team" (usually made up of the sped teacher, the psych, the social worker, etc) who help to determine what supports a child gets. Keep records of every email. Follow up every verbal communication with a "recap" email stating what was said. Keep track of every time some staff or admin on "the team" tells you how to handle situations. Keep track of what they do and do not do. Keep track of what parents say and do, too. You may need it in court some day.

But most of all, I encourage every single staff member to FIGHT for what you and your students need. I have made myself absolutely obnoxious these past few years on behalf of my students and my colleagues. I'm an older teacher and maybe I just don't care anymore what admins think. We teachers have to start demanding 1:1 aides for some of these kids while we wait for evals to happen. Go to your union (if you have one). Band together as a grade level and go to your superintendent. Go to board meetings and speak up. Complain until they give you what you need just to make you go away. Best of all, get on your contract negotiations team if you can and fight for help in your contract. Go on strike if they won't help. Organize. Go to the state board of ed and complain. Maybe we teachers need to hire legal representation to amend the IDEA. I don't know, but if we keep doing what we've always done (complaining over drinks, crying in our cars on the way to school, taking a lot of sick days just to get through the year, etc) nothing will change.

The kid in question was transferred from another school last year for supposedly strangling his teacher (in kindergarten). Since the first day of school he has had issues where hes been allowed to run rampent in the school. It got to the point where he was in trouble so often that his mom would have to walk him to the room each morning.
The day it happened the principal and them were notified that he had brought a gun to school numerous times and rumors spread about the same. They didnt do a thing about it. They said it was likely just a toy. No search, no pulling him out, nothing.
After the shooting happened a staff member called the cops because one of the other students recognized it as a gun shot. The lockdown didnt happen until well after the call had been placed. During the lockdown there wasnt a single message sent to all staff via email or text, most were left stranded in their rooms hiding with the kids for 45+ min. Its not clear to me how it happened but another member of staff was able to prevent the kid from doing anything further.
During the debriefing after no information was given about the teacher's condition or exacts about the situation. The school board and all the admins did show up for the photo op and show of support tho.
The teacher is doing decently enough for everything considered and the investigation is underway.
Huge shoutout to the Newport News PD, they showed up and responded in what seemed like record time and with everyone in the department (as well as a few other agencies).
I can verify my identity if need be but I am the spouse of an employee that was there. This was posted on a throwaway account on a vpn to prevent getting doxxed or anything from the district or anyone else.

So this kid is a sociopath.

I know that some people think that’s impossible- but I assure you, some people are born this way.

Some of them become high functioning sociopaths. But other- really can’t be saved.

Why we keep forcing our public schools to take them is beyond me. Teachers are not paid enough for this.

+1. So messed up. This kid will never be a contributing member of society or worth any amount of effort. Lock him away for life

As an aside, this is why it is worth every penny to move into a good school district. It is never worth the risks to send your kid to an underserved or developing school. So many parents complain about lack of diversity in some schools but I’ll take that lack of diversity any day of the week

Wasn't Columbine in a really "nice" suburb? And Sandy Hook? There is no safe school.

School is only 26% white so not very diverse.

44% black, 26% white, 16% Hispanic IS diverse. That still leaves 14% unaccounted for-likely Asian and multiracial.

Do you only count it as diversity when white is the majority??

Nothing in the constitution to say that there can’t be really harsh consequences when someone’s weapons are used in a crime.

I think that’s the first step towards gun control.
too bad Dems are lowering penalties for gun crimes and often drop charges all together

too bad Rs want to allow anyone to carry a gun

No. "Rs" don't want felons to carry a gun. "Ds" are apparently just fine with it.

Then why did Rs fight Obama on preventing people with mental illness from getting guns?

Also, the Constitution doesn't say anything about felons not being able to buy guns. Since it explicitly states that everyone has a right to bear arms, why shouldn't a felon carry a gun? That 2A rights that you Rs support.
virtually everyone has mental illness.

The law was only for specific mental illnesses

Time for all of the politicians to come in with all their crocodile tears. Like there is no solution to this problem. At the very least, can’t we make prospective gun owners take a class?

NP but I want to say for the record that the children I have know like this come from all sorts of backgrounds-racially and socioeconomically. The scariest ones had combative parents in denial.

if schools used to move around rapist teachers , move around rapist students , why do you think they’d do anything about a potentially violent 6 year old?

Stop being immature. Obviously it’s a good thing if felons aren’t walking around with firearms. Stop implying that it isn’t. Who the hell cares about the details and the politics. Stop making this political. We have a crisis in this country. There are literally millions and millions of gun owners out there who never hurt anyone with their guns and never would because they’re secured properly. Then there are the criminals who use their guns to commit crimes, and the idiots who make their guns available for other people to use unlawfully. We need to deal with the second problem, not the first non-problem. Gun ownership isn’t our enemy here. Republicans aren’t our enemy. Criminals are. Criminals and idiots. Let’s deal with them.
