In glib pop history, yes. In reality? No. Henry VIII had a very good (religious) case for an annulment and it was denied for largely political reasons. That also all irrelevant, because the foundation of Anglicanism is the Elizabethan Settlement, not Henry VIII.

So basically you worship the Monarch of the UK? Henry VIII did not have a good religious reason.

Henry wanted to marry Anne Boleyn, and believed she could produce an heir, but he was still married to Catherine. When he discovered that Anne Boleyn was pregnant, Henry arranged to marry her in secret at Whitehall Palace - this marked the beginning of the break with Rome.

He also wanted the Church's money from the dissolution of the Abbeys.

I’m interested because of the historical significance, but I don’t/won’t feel sadness if that makes sense.

I don't think many Americans will have sleepless nights over it, per se, but the woman watched over our closest allied nation for 70 years. There are many thoughts on the role of a monarchy, but I think it is undeniable that she sacrificed a great deal of personal pleasure (such as time with her family and children) to provide a steady face of the nation. It is a reflective time and certainly sad for her family and her country.

Laughable. She is a figure head. She does not give interviews or says anything that is not scripted. Her family was handled off to nannies and governesses. She had a very privileged life but did nit get along with other who took the spot light away- Diana, etc. Huge ego but that goes with the job.

I wrote "watched over," not governed, for a reason. And who is to say anyone in that position wouldn't rather watch their own kids than hand them over to nannies and governesses? When I apply for jobs I look at the amount of travel because I want to be able to do bedtime routine and be there to comfort them when they are up sick in the night. YMMV, but I'd prefer that to handing my kids over. It is simple to think that giving your kids to a nanny is preferable to being with them.

I think that the fascination with royal weddings is moronic, that there's a good argument to abolish the monarchy in Britain, and could not have cared less about Diana's death. You couldn't pay me to watch The Crown.

And yet, I find myself oddly affected by this. The Queen has been head of state of our closest ally for my entire lifetime (and 20 years before that). That's astonishing, and something that should be celebrated.

I think I understand your question and thought about it. Personally, there are a few people who I see as world "celebrities" who I have 0 connection to, but I pay attention to (so I guess I care). I think some of these people transcend their national borders and they come from all walks of life. They are people like Queen Elizabeth, Dali Lama, Mother Theresa, Oprah, Nelson Mandela and even the Pope. I'm sure you can think of other people, but I hope you get my point. These people have made a mark on the world in one way or another and are larger than life. Just my .02.
