There are several issues happening all at once. Amtrak wants to fix the issues in common areas and surrounding entrances and security. Paid 250 million to the courts to take over retail as common areas of Union Station controlled by bankrupt leasing company. Bankrupt leasing company out of NY wants 700 million to release their contract (good through 2084). Court battle = mess. Leasing company doing bare minimum to nothing to maintain station at this point.
Second separate issue, Texas and Arizona shipping their state level politics to our city and region, and using impoverished human beings to prove a point. Below human dignity.
If DC started sending buses of drug addicted mentally ill people to Texas and Arizona , these states wouldn't have an argument. These states are making their state level problem DC's local city humanitarian crisis. Yet don't want DC to be a state... such hypocrites!
The federal government allows thousands of undocumented people to come over the United States border per day, and that is a is a “state” problem?
DC has received 4,000 immigrants total. That’s how many come over the border per day.
Yet DC declared itself a “sanctuary city.” The hypocrisy is all on one side, and its not Texas.
Agree. I’m so glad Texas did this so people in other states can wake up to what is truly going on. It’s easier to ignore when it’s not in your face. I can usually see two sides to every story but for this one I can’t.
+1000 Why should Texas have to deal with this problem that was created by Joe Biden in Washington?

This!!!! Except hopefully it’s closer to 10,000 in a few weeks. Keep them coming. 3.5 million have crossed the border. It’s laughable that someone cares about 4,000 out of 3.5 million.
What is your solution to asylum seekers?
NP but if they are from Mexico then we follow the asylum laws. If they are from a different country and passed through Mexico or other countries before coming here then we follow the law and send them back to the first country they entered and have them apply for asylum there.

Hmmm I wonder if anyone has considered enforcing immigration laws.
How do you enforce a law when the bus , sent by a governor, arrives at 1am with women and small children who haven't eaten for two days. It's despicable. 3,400 people since May.
Truly despicable. This is why DC needs to be a state now.
You are OK with people who haven't eaten for two days (or longer) being received and processed by Texas, but not by DC? 3,400 is a drop in the pan compared to what Texas handles on a daily basis. Why don't you get on out there and set up sandwiches and soup reception, like the Poles did for the Ukrainians?
Makes sense for Texas to make their point but its not effecting Biden, just locals.
What are you talking about---I'm talking about Abbott playing chess with people's lives. It's a stunt on his part. That's what is despicable. DC needs to be a state so that the rest of the country realizes real people live here. I'm completely fine with DC taking them in, but I find it troubling that they're immediately shipped off on a days long journey when some of them may need medical attention and could rest.
They all choose to go. No one forces them on a bus.
Sure, Jan. Abbott is so generous. From the article posted above this post:
"Since April, Texas and Arizona have sent a combined 4,000 migrants to the District, with officials in both states claiming that migrants voluntarily agreed to take the bus trip north.
It now appears, however, that those participating in the trips may have been under the impression that they would have a final destination other than D.C.
One asylum seeker mother of two from Venezuela told WUSA9 on Thursday that she was told in Texas that she and her family would be sent to Colorado after they arrive in the nation's capital, which never happened.
Another mother of three said a Texas official told her that someone in D.C. would provide her family transport to Chicago.
'But it was all a lie,' she said."
AND ALSO:
"The goal, according to Abbott, was to bring the crisis to the doorsteps of President Joe Biden and other D.C. elite to elicit a stronger response to the southern border crisis from the administration."

I believe the pp was referring to prior to them arriving at the governor's state. As in why should that state have to handle all the costs?
They arrived legally and are in the US legally. And they're probably thrilled to get out of Texas - I know the first buses, at least, were full of volunteers. There are many humanitarian issues with the situation but they're not here illegally.
Curious… why do you think they’re here legally? The articles I’ve read don’t spell it out but lots suggest these were people “caught” crossing the border. Doesn’t sound like there here legally.
People cross the border and are allowed to stay until their case can be sorted out which can be years. They are free to travel anywhere. Must connect with family or existing contacts. This is nothing new. Many continue to other places from DC.
