I attended Wilco’s Solid Sound festival at MASS MoCA this weekend; they debuted their new double album Cruel Country. Fans of alt-country/outlaw country will want to check it out—it’s growing on me quickly. But a highlight of the festival was Terry Allen who still has a fabulous voice at 79. Towards the end of his set, he introduced his ‘dear friend David Byrne’ who walked out on stage and helped with the final two songs.
What an amazing experience!

Garrett Hedlund did several covers of Merle Haggard songs for Country Strong (a not great movie I love to watch), including Silver Wings. I also love Hard Out Here sung by Garrett Hedlund (messy personal life; I guess he’s country).
And this is country inflected with several other stylings, but this is amazing, the Okie Dokie Stomp: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ylzksv6N_x0
Thanks for sharing. You’re right that the Okie Dokie Stomp had a country inflection, but it’s the first time I’ve seen something that country paired with go-go dancers. It’s really amazing how fast and how radically music was changing back then.
