Not that Logan sounded good, but Reid sounds absolutely dreadful. It’s like the School Board members just cloned Meren or Cohen, with a dash of Omeish.

Could they please just make Presidio the interim superintendent until there’s a new Board elected to which a qualified permanent replacement might conceivably want to report?

I think it’s culture wars to say they don’t want teaching about slavery in VA. Show me a link proving that now with Youngkin slavery can’t be taught in VA. I think you’re exaggerating what no CRT means and that IS culture wars.

Hell. No. “Mama Bears” need not apply. Although at this point, they may be the only willing candidates.

Would one of the “Mama Bears” focus on academics and facilities rather than the woke nonsense that’s defined the last two years of Brabrand’s tenure?

If so, sign her up!

Literally, the only things "woke" related the last two years that have even remotely affected me are from the right. They are the ones banning books, focusing time/energy/money removing teaching of a concept in the schools that was never taught, and frothing at the mouth like rabid raccoons at SB meetings.

“Mama Bears” are hysterical loons pulling resources AWAY from academics.

We just want to make sure kids are actually in school in person no matter where this pandemic goes in the future and unfortunately we can't trust the current people in charge on that front. It's a really low bar but anyone is better than who we have now.

I too am very unhappy with the current school board, but don't kid yourself that it can't be worse. Have you paid any attention to what is happening in TX or FL lately? It definitely CAN get worse.

In my opinion the majority of students in TX and FL are better off having had in person school for a year more than FCPS.

I strongly disagree. Those students don’t have much of an education since their states so severely restricted the scope of their education by banning books and teaching of full history. Of course, Youngkin is trying to do the same here in VA.

You can always teach YOUR own kid whatever you want. Why are you so worried about what other people's kids are learning?

Because public schools teach all of our kids! They serve an important function in our society and should include all history and wide access to books so our kids are well-informed. But let me guess, you advocate for a Hillsdale college/1776 Commission education paid for by taxpayers.

No - I just know there’s plenty of non controversial stuff to teach without engaging in culture wars. I have teaching experience. Not sure if you do.

Did you say Garza and generally respected in the same sentance? LMAO

DP. Garza wasn't universally respected, and she was positively disliked by many members of the Board of Supervisors because of her willingness to resort to campaigns like #SaveFCPS to get more money. And she probably hadn't ever learned where even 1/2 the schools in FCPS were actually located by the time she left.

But I don't think she ever pandered to School Board members the way that Brabrand did. Which is sad, because it got him nothing. Whenever he pivoted to try and keep them happy, they still found a way to second-guess him and harass him in public.

They need someone with the confidence of a Garza or a Domenech, but who can also quickly demonstrate that they understand the challenges of a large school district. Brabrand came from FCPS so he knew where the schools are located and what challenges different schools faced, but he did very, very little to actually address those challenges. On most fronts, he leaves FCPS in worse shape than when he arrived.

You are referring to Kofi Annan, who resigned after he'd sent vulgar, sexist text messages to Shirley Ginwright, who'd previously been the head of the Fairfax chapter. He thought she was too tight with the FCPD. Both Annan and Ginwright are Black.

There's no question that many of the Fairfax NAACP members are White, but the senior leadership is mostly Black. It's folks like Harry Jackson who like to suggest that Whites control the Fairfax NAACP as part of their argument that the changes to the TJ admission process have been driven by Whites rather than Blacks or Hispanics.

My guess is that she withdrew when the cat was out of the bag that she was potentially leaving her current district. Without a guarantee of the FCPS job, she had no choice but to withdraw and recommit to her current employer.

It’s so awful that the NAACP released the names of the candidates. I feel bad for her having to make amends with her current district just because the NAACP was so inappropriate. If for some reason they felt they needed to make a public statement based on unauthorized information, they should have been general in their concerns and not share the names of the finalists.

Hmmmm maybe involving a bunch of “special interest groups” and entrusting them with confidential information about the finalists wasn’t a great idea.

There weren’t special interest groups on the interviewing panel! You completely missed the point. The NAACP was mad they weren’t included so sabotaged the process.

Thanks for sharing your “opinion” that is not based on any valid data. Hearing from your friends in those states doesn’t count as valid data. Come back when you can compare apples to apples data like SAT scores.

You have no data to support your opinion either- so it's just as valid as mine is. And there is data on how the pandemic school closures harmed kids - so I have more data than you do on my side to boot.

DP here. Yes, it was great that TX and FL kept their schools open. But, the point being made about things could be worse re: TX and FL is what they are NOT teaching their kids in school, or what they are wrongly teaching kids about history. Our school board may be terrible re: keeping schools closed, but at least we don't have nutty Christian-faux-history-faux science being taught. We don't have trans kids being systemically ostracized. We HAVE sex ed in school.

It could be a lot worse in some ways.

Whatever our curriculum doesn't cover - I can teach outside of school to the extent I want to. There is plenty of non controversial stuff to keep kids occupied K-12. I'm a former teacher and have worked in education in many capacities since 1999.

Michelle's twitter is full of student achievements, art projects, awards that students have won, school sports news, etc. etc. Every fourth Brabrand post is about equity, inclusion, black history month, etc. etc. Not that those things aren't important in their own right but it shouldn't be the most common themed post. What a knob. Good riddance
