Indica strains are predominantly the culprits for the stronger skunky smells. Sativa tends to be a sweeter, woody smell. Indica weed is good for relaxing you so it’s often used for anxiety, stress, sleep problems, etc. And for pain. Sativa produces and more energetic high.
Why do people notice more of a skunky smell now than they remember from years ago? Probably a couple of reasons - the popularity of several Kush strains over the past 20-30 years, which are Indica. And also because medical marijuana prescriptions are for Indica strains than Sativa ones

I grew up in a hippie town in the 70s, and to all you "it always smelled that way" folks, no, it did not. But people didn't get as much choice about the effects of what they smoked, so I guess the tradeoff is worth it (still hate the skunky ones, though)
