Somehow I doubt that. I don't go to Giant, but go to Costco or Whole Foods in Pentagon City and probably 99% of everyone is masked.
The issue with Youngkin is that it was a similar store. Everyone in that store was masked - with the exception of Youngkin and what may have been one or two of his aides. Clearly he has constituents who are still very much concerned about covid, and about the spread. He is being callously oblivious to their concerns. It is not a good look for him. It shows he does not care about his constituents' concerns, even when he is in a room where the very clear majority are masked.
Again, this is a your opinion. You are making up “rules” based on nothing but your feelings. There is no mandate and he is not breaking any actual rules. Frankly, he is practicing exactly what he preaches. As I mentioned upthread, this is all “crabs in a bucket” mentality. We need more people to break away from the groupthink. A lot of us are sick of being forced to pander to irrational and overly anxious people and it’s refreshing to see a leader with the guts to break the cycle.

Do vaccines exist, or don’t they?
Are people refusing to get vaxed due to right wing propaganda, or not?

My family is all vaccinated, boosted, everything. Everyone but me just got Covid and got over it.
We are done with this. Our entire society doesn't revolve around the preferences of a vocal fringe group that is still terrified of Covid.
Did you consider thanking the anti-mask freedom fighter who likely selfishly passed Covid on to your family?
So now it’s a moral failing to pass along a microscopic germ? Do you have this opinion of the thousands of other people who have “selfishly” passed their germs to you throughout your life? Maybe you yourself once selfishly passed along a cold to an older person, who then developed pneumonia and died. Do you have any idea how insane your take on this sounds? Not to mention that omicron infected practically everyone, mask or no, vaccine or no. If it hasn’t yet, your time will come, and you will also become one of the “Unclean!”
Yeah, it kinda is if there is simple thing that one can do to reduce the possibility.
And, yeah, moving forward, if I have a cold I'll either wear a mask or stay home for a day or two. Hopefully others do the same. See how we can all grow and learn.

My kid cannot be vaxed yet so thanks for giving a shit.
DP-Good grief-you act like you’re the only parent in the world. I also have a kid that isn’t eligible to be vaccinated and it makes no difference in our lives. I’m religious about yearly flu shots, but really, a virus that statistically presents virtually no danger to them? The burden of mitigating risk for grown adults who can make their own healthcare choices should not fall on children, full stop.
Seriously, both of my under 5 kids have recently had covid and literally all they did was sneeze a little bit more. No fever, no lack of energy, no coughing, nothing. We were lucky, but it’s not unusual. But they’ve been out of daycare for 2+ weeks at this point. People need to get over it and with testing negative taking 10 days on pcr it is some BS.

What does Alexandria and read the room have to do with anything. Is Alexandria a mask wearing tribe? What are the risks to the triple vaxxed, how does that compare to flu and other viruses, how exactly effective are a lot of these masks?
And now truth about covid today: it is less of a risk, according to official and reliable government data, than many typical daily activities we engage in without fear. Per a recent NYT article:
"Once you get a booster, your risk of getting severely ill from Covid is tiny. It is quite small even if you are older or have health problems. The average weekly chance that a boosted person died of Covid was about one in a million during October and November (the most recent available C.D.C. data). That risk is not zero, but it is not far from it. The chance that an average American will die in a car crash this week is significantly higher — about 2.4 per million. So is the average weekly death rate from influenza and pneumonia — about three per million. With a booster shot, Covid resembles other respiratory illnesses that have been around for years. "
The Biden administration is blowing the messaging and losing the narrative. The only - and I mean only - number that matters is a numerator over a denominator that defines your likelihood of dying from covid. And if you're fully boosted, that number is now virtually 0.
Everything else is noise...mask quality, ventilation, social distancing, etc etc. It mattered early on, but not anymore. Cases don't matter, except as they might 'overwhelm' hospitals...though we cannot live under that threat forever.
Every credible expert outside of the administration is calling for rapid reduction of restrictions, starting with masks. I truly hope Biden's experts get control of the narrative - the economy is booming and the vaccines work, but no one feels better because we are still being told to hunker down. It's bad politics, and inconsistent with the science and facts on the ground.
And yes, it is why Youngkin won - democrats never offered an off ramp. Mask forever, school shutdowns no big deal, and so on. Should we rip the masks off kids now while omicron is still a threat? No. But where was/is the offramp metrics from Duran? APS? Arlington County? Democratic controlled Richmond?
Scream at me if you want, but remember:
Science is real. Wearing a mask is now political theater.
OMG, sounds like this author needs to learn to "read the room," it doesn't matter what the science says or the statistics say, what is important is that they comply.
The science says that masks reduce transmission of Covid. That's the science. The terms "science" and "data" are being co-opted by the anti-vax MAGA crew, and enough already. If you want the science then wear a damn mask and get your vaccine.
I am vaxxed, boosted, and have had Covid along with my family and most of my friends and coworkers.
I have worked in person throughout this pandemic, as has my spouse, while our school aged kids were in daycare. Not every job can be done from your basement while you wait for Amazon Fresh to bring your kombucha.
I am done with masks and I am done with karens trying to tell me how to live my life.
If you want to walk around wearing a properly fitting N95 respirator, fine, have fun with that.
Fear is not virtuous.

I completely agree with you. I’m fully vaxxed, got Covid anyway, and have recovered. The ONLY reason I continue to wear a mask in stores is quite honestly to keep the crazy LWNJs from confronting me. I have no interest in dealing with the unhinged. If it wasn’t for these nutters, I’d have no problem unmasking. The majority of elderly people I see out and about are unmasked - and I’m a healthy person who is far younger than they are. Mask theater has been unmasked for what it is.

“Break away from groupthink” is code for “act like a selfish jerk”. That is why I don’t take you seriously. It’s just a mask. It doesn’t hurt you at all. Get over it.
Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:I am vaxxed and boosted. I wear a mask in public because I don't want to catch covid. I lost valuable time I could have spent with my dad dying of cancer due to covid. My children lost over a year in school due to covid. I spent at least 1 year entirely isolating from the outside world and then many months to now being cautious and calculated about my interactions with the public. Why in the hell would I have done any of that to just get covid now because people want to throw a middle finger to science and refuse to vax, boost and/or wear a mask due to personal freedom bs?
Wear your mask. No one says you can’t. That isn’t what is happening. But you shouldn’t get to tell me that I have to wear a mask forever. No one has researched the affect of masks long term on asthmatics. But I can tell you my sons asthma was gone before the Covid masks. No meds or episodes for two years. Now he takes maintenance again twice a day. So your personal issues are guiding your choices and mine are guiding mine. Yours are not more important to me than mine. That is the deal.

“The City of Alexandria and the Alexandria Health Department (AHD) strongly urge everyone help end the pandemic by wearing a mask over both your nose and mouth, washing your hands frequently, and getting vaccinated. Approximately 1 in 20 Alexandrians who have tested positive for COVID-19 have required hospitalization, so without these critical steps, additional lives may be at risk. Your neighbors and loved ones are counting on you to stop the spread of COVID-19.”

Alexandria is currently is “high transmission” red zone. In fact, it’s more than 5x over the lower limit of high transmission.
https://www.alexandriava.gov/performance/info/dashboard.aspx?id=114883
Safeway policy is to require masks for everyone in areas of high transmission.
Screw Youngkin. Like Boris Johnson, he’s ignoring the rules the rest of us follow. Asshole.
How will "wearing a mask" help end the pandemic? It may slow the rate of transmission but it plays no other role.
And slowing transmission reduces variants. The more people unmask, the longer we need to mask.
Which variants have come from the US?
