OP, your son needs perspective. He is certainly old enough to know that unless his parents are Jeff Freaking Bezos, there will always be someone out there with better resources than his parents do. Or that different people use their money and privilege differently. He's not some poor kid who is bound for a community college due to lack of resources.
If this were my kid, I would be wondering how I failed as a parent, that mine grew up with no awareness of his own privilege.

+1000. So sick of everyone’s assumptions about private school families. You don’t know us, our background, or what we do to send our DC to private. So just stop already!

I pointed out how the friend didn’t have to tell him, especially because the parents asked him not to and maybe the friend wanted to tell him all along.
He seems calmer now.
As for applying to the same schools, many of the kids from their school did. The difference in their lists were in safety schools.
He’s processing it all and have been talking to his friend on discord, he said.
Truth is the other mom probably didn’t want you to know because they want everyone to think junior got in on his own without connections. There’s all this talk about “hooks” and “affirmative action.” Kids with wealthy, connected parents have always benefitted from that and their parents have tried to pretend it wasn’t a factor. That is why you get adults who are entitled or think they are smarter or more accomplished than they are. It’s like the toddler who thinks he actually beat you in a race because he doesn’t understand you rigged it for him to win. He thinks he’s won because he’s fast.
