I seriously can not believe some people are defending the status quo. And yes, I will absolutely take the CEO doing some pricey coke here and there as a neighbor over a methed out schizophrenic defecating on bus stop benches. Stop normalizing this “alternative lifestyle” - these are sick people that need treatment against their will for the safety of all.

What is your solution?

Don’t be Portland.

That is not a solution. Homeless people don't disappear simply bc you dismantled their tent encampments. They come back. What is a long-term solution?
.

Why not just accept them as people living an alternative lifestyle?

It's a good thing that there are no drug addicts in expensive housing areas.

Ok, so maybe there are but at least they aren't poor drug addicts. That's what we really don't want to see.

If my kid is going to get run over by someone I'd like it to be a coked up CEO, not some riff raff.

Long term, look at why people end up on the streets. We need better support structures within our communities, not just everyone out for themselves. Drugs / mental health doesn't have to mean alone on the streets. It just does frequently if you're poor and/or don't have the right support.

Portland here again, so don't look to solutions from us first off. They aren't being implemented here and a big problem is the refusal to even state the problem by leadership and activists. The problem with Housing First is apparently the methamphetamine addict's brain damage. If you want housing to work out, detox must come first. Great piece from today on this: https://www.opb.org/article/2021/11/01/the-formulation-of-meth-has-changed-it-may-be-contributing-to-this-countrys-mental-health-crisis/

+100 These individuals need treatment before being placed in housing and support services afterwards. DC is placing people in apartment buildings where others pay market rate, in expensive areas of city, and residents are complaining of spikes in crime, feeling unsafe because of mentally ill people having episodes in common areas and police being called to buildings regularly. Just dumping some of them in housing is also not the answer.

As if no one thought of this before..have you ever tried to detox am addict against their will?

Anonymous wrote:OP, what is your solution to the homeless problem? As it is, the counties all send their homeless to DC for us to deal with. Maybe there should be a regional task force and sharing of resources rather than just sloughing it all on us so your precious suburbs can appear neat and tidy?

Solution? They should stay with friends and family. If they have wore out their welcome, people who are sympathetic to homeless should let them camp in their backyard. The LAST place they should be in our streets. It’s filthy and ruins the street for everyone else.
