This is the silliest thing I’ve ever read. I’m one of two- I SAH now but used to have a successful career pre kids. My brother is an incredible musician. My husband is one of two- he’s a big law partner and his sister is a doctor. I have three kids because I love raising kids and enjoy the interactions between them. All of my kids are healthy and well liked and attractive and good kind people. Who knows who they will grow up to be but I certainly didn’t procreate to counter the future.

A really common motivation is being overlooked here. When we were growing up families of 3 were everywhere. Many of us grew up in them. I always imagined having 3 because that's what I was familiar with. DH wants one because he grew up an only child. It's nothing pathological on either side. It's pretty basic.

WTH. People are so weird. I have two siblings. When I got pregnant with my third, I already had a boy and a girl. I never thought about any of them being a “dud.” I can’t believe people talk about their kids this way. No wonder so many kids are so screwed up.

I don't get why DCUMers are so scandalized by gender preference. I wanted a girl. I got one. She has been everything I hoped would happen if I got a girl: my shopping buddy, my manicure tagalong, even picks out my outfits for weddings and helped me do the interior decor after our remodel. I also have two boys. I have a really rich and wonderful life.


Part of (but not all of) the reason I didn’t have a third was I was terrified it would be a boy. I have two girls and wanted a third girl if I had another one. I love having girls and really just couldn’t/can’t picture myself with boys. I’m not embarrassed by this. I really don’t think I would have done well with the noise and impulsiveness of boys.


You're not embarrassed by the fact that you stereotype an entire gender, to the point where you don't think you could have figured out how to capably raise a boy?

I'd be embarrassed by that.

Everyone knows never marry the baby bro. Best case scenario they are all just ticking time bombs waiting to blow, but with a long fuse. Worst case bandaids baby man who you will always have to monitor like a mama hen, henpecking him left and right, day in and day out for the rest of your lives together. He will never leave you as long as you keep cleaning up his crappy mess. But beware take your eyes off of him in order to take care of yourself and he implodes and takes you all down with him.

If you weren’t such a dud yourself this would have been obvious to you and you’d have bypassed him altogether.

+100. I had 3 kids for the same reason as you, and several family members/friends were shocked and kept asking if 3rd baby was an accident. They couldn’t imagine why we’d have another though it totally makes sense to us.

I met a single mom once who told me she was an only, so she had 6 kids so her kids would never be alone in the world
