It occurred to me as I was reading this that the writers have a limited amount of time to add any backstory from the kids' childhood. The child actors are going to grow and change so fast, especially the youngest ones, that there is a short window to film those scenes.

I agree. I think her fit of anger in this episode is a red herring.

I was wondering if a fire was somehow involved in the injury -- somebody sets the tenement on fire and Beth runs in to save the residents. Kind of like a repeat of what happened to their dad.

Her biomom had, in her eyes, rejected her (by seeking to terminate parental rights) and her biodad had never been in the picture, so I assumed she felt as though this was one more way of erasing her actual origins. It's one thing to have people wanting to include you in their family and quite another to feel as though they're saying your original family never existed.

Think of all the people om DCUM who are outraged that their ILs want to be called Mom & Dad.

Also, I didn’t understand why Deja got so mad when Toby’s mom said she looks like Randall. She was fine when she referred to the three of them as their girls, so she wasn’t upset about being seen as part of the family. So why did that comment trigger her? This is interesting. Apparently Deja doesn’t kill Beth or Annie at the wedding, or ever, like so many people online have speculated. Whatever is going on with Randall’s family in the flash forward will start to develop next season, according to this. I’m guessing it has to do with Annie. I think she gets overlooked because if Deja, the apartment building, and whatever else her parents take on over the next few years. Tess fits into their world better since we know she becomes a social worker. Maybe she gets more involved so doesn’t end up ignored. All of this philanthropy is not Annie’s thing so she starts to rebel. Perhaps Randall and Tess are going to see her in rehab or prison. Maybe she can only have two visitors at a time and Beth and Deja might have gone in first and now it’s Randall and Tess’s turn to go see her. I just hope they don’t make it seem like Deja’s fault that she turned bad. I don’t want them to paint foster kids in a bad light.

I agree with the PP that the show loves to expectations on their head, so I don't think this is as simple as Deja smashes windows and ruins her life. Maybe her biomom comes back into her life after Deja is grown, and Randall and Beth's family tries to rally round, but it's miserable?

I don't think she just went back to the workforce when Randall quit. When she had the pregnancy scare in Season 1, she said something about having just gone back full time. I think that until Annie was in 1st grade that Beth worked part time and then went full time.

My guess is it is Beth (cancer) or Rebecca dying (cancer/something related to being older)
