WASHINGTON (AP) — Hackers impersonating journalists tried to intercept the communications of a prominent Saudi opposition figure in Washington, The Associated Press has found.

One attempt involved the fabrication of a fake BBC secretary and an elaborate television interview request; the other involved the impersonation of slain Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi to deliver a malicious link.

Media rights defenders denounced the hacking effort, which they said would make it harder for genuine reporters to do their jobs.

An Arab pro-democracy campaigner under government protection in Norway believes he is being targeted by Saudi Arabia for work he inherited from the murdered journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Iyad al-Baghdadi said he was one of three activists warned by the CIA of threats from Riyadh after they took over digital projects begun by Khashoggi to combat account hacking and the hounding of critical voices on social media.

Khashoggi was murdered in October in the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul. The CIA said it had “medium-to- high confidence” that the killing was ordered by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Mr Baghdadi believes he was targeted, in particular, for helping to investigate the alleged hacking and blackmail of Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon and owner of The Washington Post.

Baghdadi is not s Saudi dissident. He’s a Palestinian who grew up in the UAE. He probably never set foot in Saudi.

As usual, it’s too much to expect that white people get their Arabs right.

I don’t think you read the PP right. It doesn’t say he’s Saudi, it says he’s a dissident and it’s pretty clear that SA is targeting him because he took over Khashoggi’s work.

That's exactly what it says actually.

Yes, he is a dissident against Saudi Arabia, or in kind of sloppy shorthand, a Saudi dissident.

None of this changes the fact that Khashoggi was slaughtered, that Donald and Jared definitely knew this after and have sided with MBS and they quite possibly knew before. That makes them a party to assassination.
