Interesting blip in 2010!

Smart senior class at STA this year! 14 National Merit Semifinalists and another 24 National Merit Commended Students, out of a class size of about 90, I think.

They will occasionally look at admission of a top athlete, even as a junior--but that is rare.

I was told earlier this year by the AD that they only take a few for 10th grade as boarders, not as day students.

Good advice above from PP except it may be worth posing the question to the Admissions Director/office. They may know of someone leaving the class for example and they may be looking for a replacement -- you don't know unless you ask.

My feeling is that it would be worth applying only if there were exceptional circumstances (ie, not just to "give it a try"). Not only would that include moving to the area mid-year, but also if you have a daughter and this is an entry year for her to NCS, then you might want to (for logistical reasons) have them on the same campus the same year (even if for StA it's not an entry year).

But just applying in 8th grade for the sake of trying a year earlier I think would not be fruitful.

It's not an entry year, but on occasion a new kid will enter in 8th (ie, political families needing to move to DC mid-year).
