Yes, this person FCPS'es. For sure there will be a sudden uptick in interest in taking Latin.

You can no longer pupil place for languages, they changed that this year. You can pupil place for AP or IB or specialized programs. So Westfield kids are likely to really want aviation or STEM pathways.

I thought that was proposed but tabled?

Regardless, there are multiple other ways to get your kid into neighboring schools (legit and illegit).

People were posting about rising 9th graders wanting to pupil place for language and it not being available. We know people in Japanese Immersion who pupil place to SLHS and they had to select IB because Japanese was not an option this year. Kids who had already been pupil placed were allowed to remain but rising 9th graders did not have the option.

That tells me that someone knew Skyview would be Fox Mill and that immersion kids were opting in to Skyview.

No, they want to attend SLHS and pupil placed for IB out of Herndon. People used to pupil place for Japanese. But Fox Mill families have been active in moving to Skyview, a lot opted in to Skyview.

I think what's funny about this is that I don't think Skyview's demographics are going to be much different than South Lakes

It has nothing to do with demographics. Some people like IB, more people prefer AP, and most people don’t care. There are people who pupil place to SLHS for IB from Herndon, Westfield, Chantilly and other schools. Others pupil place out for AP.

FMES goes to Carson for MS and then to SLHS barely knowing anyone. Most people from FMES want to move with the other schools to Skyview. Skyview is closer. Skyview will have AP. Hughes doesn’t have space for FMES so you can’t move FMES to Hughes so they can move with the other students to SLHS.

As a Floris SLHS parent I would echo this. Our kids are split from the rest of Floris (probably less than a quarter now) after Carson and the transition is so hard. Skyview is half the distance than South Lakes is for us so that’s another plus.

She opposes micro-split feeders, mentions this connected to Crossfield and it's new feeder pattern.
She opposes the Fox Mill move because it will "further decrease under-enrolled membership"

SLHS is at 98% capacity, even at 85% capacity it is not under enrolled. The issue is that they don't have enough students taking IB, is my guess. That is not FMES fault, nor is it FMES problem.

Isn't she a little big late to express her opinion publicly? I feel she went easy and avoided conflict before the last version came out, which had fmes in both versions. And now, she is say cheap words hopefully to reduce blames from slhs parents. She should really push to fix IB in slhs if that's one of the main complaints of slhs.

If we are going off of the McDaniel phone call yesterday which stated only tweaks would be made to the final scenario, keeping FMES at SLHS would be a major change.

Exactly. It’s too late to make any big changes now, or else fmes parents will be really mad and revolt.

To be fair, I think Meren knows a good number of FMES families are not voting for her. I am thinking she is trying to position herself to the SLHS community saying she made her best effort but there wasn't anything that she could do. I think her approach is really to aim for a "phased in approach", at least that is what she posted on her FB topic. The current process is too fast, it is better for Skyview to be small and something then to set boundaries and move kids. In the past she has said she doesn't think the school should open next year.

I hope that ship has sailed.......

I would be shocked if it hasn't. They have the buidling, staff, teachers, and students. I think it is a go. I am not really sure what Meren thinks she is going to do to slow it down.

The Fairfax island could be dissolved by sending Willow Springs (main portion and island) and Eagle View to Centreville and the Fairfax part of Greenbriar East to Chantilly, and remove the Union Mill Split feeder by moving the Robinson part to Centreville.

How does this help Centreville's overcrowding? That's adding in a lot more then you are subtracting.
Centreville is being renovated and expanded to hold 3000 students.

Those changes help justify the renovation.

They need to just renovate Centreville, there is no need for expansion. There are seats at Westfield. They can move students to Westfield. The idea that people get to throw a hissy fit about moving and get an expansion is ridiculous.

They should be moving Centerville students to Westfield.

And there is no possible way to financially justify building out CVHS to 3000 seats when Westfield has 800+ empty seats!

The renovation has not been approved due to land use issues.

But then you’re emptying out Fairfax HS. As long as FCPS is operating Fairfax, you can’t justify a monster expansion of Centreville that leaves Fairfax far under capacity.

If FCPS is going to sever the relationship with the City of Fairfax, it’s a different situation, but that’s a big decision that won’t be made lightly.

This may not be about Athletics and Home Values, but Race, Socioeconomics, and possibly Religion.

You're just figuring this out?
No, but I definitely was giving it some deep, pensive thought though.

A functioning school system would have taken the information that no one wanted to be rezoned to Westfield as a sign that the school needs some attention and improvement. FCPS decided to just go ahead and try to make it worse.

You forget that Coates and McNair - two very high FARMS schools - are being zoned out of Westfield.

And, they only had part of Floris. Some MC/UMC from Floris, but also multi family housing from Floris.
