I could see two groups opting in: 1) those currently zoned for Westfield or South Lakes (or highly likely to be moved to one of those) who want to avoid it no matter what; 2) those who are in boundary for Western HS in all four maps that have been shown so far.

I agree but the only reason I can imagine South Lakes families would choose Western is to go to an AP school and Western won't even offer AP its first year!!

So, kids "opt in" before they know if they will be "in boundary" and won't know for sure if transportation will be provided?

Who made this timeline for the Western school? It defies logical thinking.

It is such a clusterf*. How are 8th graders supposed to pick their courses if they won't even know if they are zoned for the school until June?? If the staffing isn't even done until the spring??

Rising juniors moved to Westfield, and I think to South County when they opened.

No one wants to move Juniors so they are not going to open it with three grades.

They’d have been so much better off postponing the opening of this school until it was ready to accommodate three grades, and then opening it with fixed boundaries and only allowing rising juniors to stay at their prior schools. But they have no spine, so they just toss out one bad idea after another. In placating people who should have been reminded of their good fortune, they are making Western HS seem less desirable by the day.

I'm sure that their planning and programming will help them win this award (from Superintendent's Reflections)

https://www.fcps.edu/news/superintendents-weekly-reflections-160

I’m pleased to announce that FCPS will be submitting an application for the Baldridge Award for Excellence this week. The Baldrige Award is a national program that helps schools and organizations improve how they work, make better decisions, and focus on what matters most. Our application will be reviewed by experts from The Partnership for Excellence, who will study our systems and give us helpful feedback about what we’re doing well and where we can grow. This process builds on the progress we’ve already made — including winning the Spirit and Pioneer Awards earlier this year. Even though we’re proud of our strong performance, we know there’s always room to improve.

The Baldrige process gives us a clear way to reflect on how we lead, how we serve our students and staff, and how we can get even better. It helps us focus on important goals like student success, using data to guide decisions, and being responsible with our resources. Writing the application has already taught us a lot about our strengths and areas where we can improve. In March, we’ll meet with Baldrige examiners to talk more about our work, and later in 2026 we’ll receive a feedback report with specific ideas for improvement. That information will help us make our systems stronger, work more efficiently, and continue offering the best education possible for our students. This work matters!!

Where have they publicly advocated for this? Last I heard they were advocating for Option B of the four maps. I didn't hear anyone at a meeting say KAA should be a magnet. Are they lobbying school board members behind closed doors or something?

On their own website:

https://rootedinoakton.com/ourposition

I just clicked on that link and under “our position” it says option b.

Don’t mislead people. It also says:

“Equity and Choice: A magnet model would make Western's specialized "school-within-a-school" programs available to all FCPS students, aligning directly with district equity goals without redrawing boundaries.”

Oh look. This section of their website mysteriously disappeared. I guess the Crossfield parents running the rooted in Oakton group realized they made a strategic mistake in calling for a magnet and decided to change course.

They read this site and talk about it. There is someone posting "Crossfield people should do this...." and the Rooted in Oakton people are basically taking that messaging and turning it around into their own, so they should be thanking that person.

They are now pivoting to Option B.

Who is they?

So the athletes are penalized and have to opt out away from all their friends because of fcps piss poor planning.

But I thought these kids had prepared for years to attend this high school, and their actual community is kids at a completely different set of elementary schools (ahem rooted in Oakton) If the sport is so important shouldn’t they want to attend the base school regardless?

Someone tried to tell me that Waples Mills and Oakton ES kids play CYA sports. Like, no they don't. I have never, in the past 12 years, had a single Waples Mill or Oakton ES kid on my child's CYA sports teams.

We have had Waples Mill kids but not Oakton ES. Most kids are Oak Hill, Lees Corner, Brookfield, Greenbriar, Navy, and Crossfield.

I meant to add that I think this whole argument stems from the fact that some of the main pro Oakton people put their kids on travel sports teams that practice near or at Oakton. So if I sign my kid up for Great Falls Reston soccer, that means they should get to play for Langley I guess?

It is such a small portion of kids that play travel sports!
