Rationing makes people think of failed and semi-failed states, like Venezuela. I doubt that’s something Biden and the Dems want to be associated with right before the mid-terms.

If people understand that the purpose of rationing is to punish the oil companies and gas station operators who are gouging prices right now, they’ll be all for it. But the optics of it have to be communicated effectively. People need to understand the point of the rationing is to stabilize prices and limit profiteering by big oil. When they see oil companies as the enemy, they will applaud the administration for going after them.

Rationing isn't a solution, because it creates all sorts of kinks and funky incentives in the economy. Certain products will disappear overnight as they require hydrocarbons in the manufacturing process. It throws all sorts of wrenches into the supply chain that are difficult to foresee. Plus, you end up creating a powerful black market for additional fuel.

It's better to just let prices rise and let people/businesses make their own choices. The guys who go off-roading every weekend will curtail their activities if prices get too high. The company that relies on plastic packaging will pivot to alternative lower cost forms of packing.

Rationing will end up shutting down portions of the economy without rhyme or reason.

What exactly worked about it? The 1970s are considered the low point of American life for the last 100+ years. I'm not sure what you want to relive about that.
