I completely agree that what happened was wrong, but as a frequent flyer you're never going to fly them again? Since IAD is a hub for UA, that means it's often the best choice as far as direct flights. You would connect through another city using another airline and take more time to get to your destination with a greater possibility of delay, just so you don't fly United?

Right, but it's all situational. It worked for you that particular day because you weren't in a rush. But I'm sure we've all had times when there is pretty much no amount of money that would allow us to be delayed (not wanting to miss a wedding or graduation or school play). Dr. Dao and his wife were returning from vacation. It was a connecting flight. I'm sure once they discovered their next opportunity to get home was the next evening they determined that the desire to be home was stronger than a pay off. If an airline is going to oversell flights or try to bump paid and seated passengers they need to have insightful staff ready to handle these situations in a way that leaves customers feeling reasonably good (like the PP above) rather than in the hospital with missing teeth. Can we all focus for a moment on the fact that this man is 69 years old?! WTF? And I'm sure investigations will show that he was targeted because of his age and race.

FWIW, I've flown hundreds of thousands of miles over forty years and have never got bumped from a flight. I can't excuse what UAL did, but it seems to occur to no one in this 75 page thread that none of this would have happened if Dr. Dao had just GTFO the aircraft when asked to do so. What an attitude.

As a customer, this is not my problem. It's United's job to make their systems work for them, that is their choice.

Continental sucks too. I remember years ago when I had an international flight where the connecting flights were JAL and Continental. The service and experience was night and day.
