The kids who play at Stanford are using it as a slight advantage to go to Stanford. If they had to fly to Germany every week in the season they would do it.

Part of their prowess is being a great private academic school with P5 sports. Duke, Vanderbilt, and Northwestern are really the only others in that category. If they do independent, or drop to a G5 conference then half of that equation disappears.

In my view, Stanford & Duke were fairly similar options on opposite coasts. Northwestern next for the recruited athlete who desired an elite education at a Power 5 conference school. Then Michigan, then Vanderbilt, then Virginia, UNC, Texas, Notre Dame, USC, UCal-Berkeley, Wisconsin, Wake Forest, Boston College. Rice is not in a Power 5 conference.

A simple glance at US News College rankings shows how much a recruited athlete could benefit from earning a Stanford degree and even better if a substantial scholarship was awarded.

Now, top D-1 athletes who craved a degree from an elite institution may have to consider schools other than Stanford. May even have to step-down to the Ivy League if Duke or Northwestern or Vanderbilt are not options.

Stanford and Cal have women's lacrosse teams. So does USC, ASU and several others west of the Mississippi.

Sure, but the most sought-after football recruits want to be in the best leagues and want national exposure. This means SEC or Big Ten for football.

If Stanford joins the ACC, it may need to strip away the non-revenue sports and let them find opponents closer to home. Mid-week travel would destroy the academic journey of athletes who have to travel cross-country frequently.

Without an offer from the Big Ten Conference, Stanford's culture will suffer. Sports will have to be cut--as Stanford tried to do recently.

This would destroy Stanford's other sports. Too much mid-week long-distance travel.

Becoming an independent for a year may be the better option for Stanford. The ACC would require a long-term commitment for a short-term relationship due to the extensive travel demands.

I get it but Stanford is already all in on this.

They would have a tough time putting together a football schedule let alone a schedule for non-revenue sports

Football schedule would be easy easy. I agree on the others.

Also for every sport except football, basketball, women's soccer, and women's LAX, Stanford would be the run away favorite.

I agree football would not be that bad. Not all the way across the country:

1. Cal

2. ND

3. SMU

Add in a couple of local games BYU, Fresno, or SD State.

Then say home for:

NC State
BC
Syracuse
GTech

Away

Clemson
NC
Miami

That is only 10 games; colleges play 12 games in the regular season. But, as an independent Stanford could play just a 10 game schedule.
